Researchers Find Stem Cell to Make Eggs
There’s new hope for women looking for solutions to infertility. Research results published online by the Journal Nature Medicine reveal that scientists have found a way to produce eggs using stem cells.
FOX News Radio’s Bill Vitka reports:
Researchers say they’ve extracted a stem cell from women’s ovaries that can be used to make eggs. It’s a first-of-a-kind experiment – a new source of eggs – that may lead to new ways to battle infertility.
The finding challenges the belief that women have a fixed number of eggs from birth that are depleted by the time of menopause, and that their ovaries can’t make any more. The research is at an early stage. The search for practical application confronts any number of obstacles. The human egg is an unstable cell prone to genetic error. Creating eggs from stem cells could multiply those risks.
