Momentum? What momentum? Any momentum Rick Santorum had gained from sweeping last week's caucuses and primary was derailed over the weekend, as Mitt Romney comes out on top in both the Maine caucus and CPAC straw poll.
FOX News Radio's Chris Stanley reports:
First, it was the Conservative Political Action Conference straw poll in D.C...
(Announcement) "Governor Romney edges out Senator Santorum."
...By a 38-31% margin, with Newt Gingrich at 15% and Ron Paul at 12%. Then, it was the Maine caucuses...
(Announcement) "That winner is Mitt Romney."
Romney besting Ron Paul in that contest, 39-36%, with Santorum at 18% and Gingrich at 6%. So then why does Ron Paul sound so happy?
(Paul) "It would have been great to win outright the straw vote, but it'll even be greater to win the delegate vote."
Paul has made no secret of his strategy to have his people strongly influence delegate selection at the state GOP conventions in states where the chose national convention delegates don't have to mirror caucus winners.
