One crashed.  Then another.  And another.  And another.  Now, police in New Orleans are trying to get to the bottom of a deadly 4-car pileup.

FOX News Radio's Lisa Brady reports:

(Driver) "You just couldn't see."

Drivers, caught off guard while cruising along Interstate 10 in eastern New Orleans in the pre-dawn darkness.

(Driver) "I came in to some heavy smoke and fog."

So he hit the brakes...then someone hit him.

(Driver) "Happened all at once.  Someone slammed into me, and then the 18-wheeler went flying by."

A 40-vehicle catastrophe by the time it was all over, killing at least two people, injuring more than 60 - some of them in critical condition.  More than three dozen refused treatment for minor injuries.

The busy highway, shut down for hours.  Officially, the cause remains under investigation.
