Getting Figgy With It: What On Earth Is Figgy Pudding?

It’s a Christmas dessert we’ve all heard about…but few of us know much about.

FOX News Radio’s Lilian Woo demystifies the elusive Figgy Pudding:

    For centuries…

“Oh, bring us some figgy pudding.”

…it’s been on the demand list of carolers, but what is it?  Well, figgy pudding is essentially a version of Christmas pudding – a moist, boozy dessert closer to what we know as cake than pudding.  Jake Bishop, Editorial Director of America’s Test Kitchen, explains.

(Bishop) “Modern versions have raisins or currants, lots of spices, poured into a mold then steamed.”

Sarah Hughes, Food Purveyor in the U.K., says it’s sometimes stored for months.  When it’s time to enjoy it…

(Hughes) “You heat some brandy up in a ladle, pour it over the Christmas pudding, and then light it.  You know, the big thing is to walk in while everyone’s say around the table.”

Serve with brandy sauce or brandy butter.  I’ll drink to that.
