Wildfires are more than just a hazard to the environment - they are a health hazard, too.

Summer 2011 is turning into the "Summer of Smoke." With wildfires raging in U.S. states throughout the southeast and southwest, public health officials are warning nearby residents to stay inside, especially those with chronic respiratory problems or heart and lung disease.
The Centers for Disease Control said that smoke from wildfires contains gases and fine particles than can hurt eyes and irritate the respiratory system. The smoke is expected to drift and also affect residents in the north.
