America’s Talking – World Cup Edition
Friday marked the opening of one of the world’s biggest tournaments, the FIFA World Cup. Hosts South Africa got the competition underway in style, scoring the opening goal and hanging on for a 1-1 draw against heavily-favored Mexico.
The tie keeps alive one of two streaks that the host country will be looking to keep going—the host nation (which always plays in the 1st game) remains undefeated at 14-0-6 in the tournament opener (in the other streak, the host country has never missed advancing at least to the Round of 16).
The USA kicks-off their World Cup campaign Saturday afternoon (2:30pm ET) against England. In addition to starting off on the right foot, the US will look to repeat one of the biggest upsets in US Soccer history, a 1-0 defeat of England at the 1950 World Cup (the USA’s uniforms this year are designed after the uniforms worn by the 1950 team).
