Housecall for Health: Olympians Battling Asthma

Many Americans find themselves reaching for an inhaler because of asthma, but would you believe that a large number of top-class athletes competing at the Olympic Games in London also battle the respiratory ailment?

Here’s some surprising Olympic trivia: About 8% of Olympic athletes suffer from asthma.  A study by the University of Western Australia identified Olympians who take the asthma drug beta-2 agonists.  The drug helps with the symptoms of narrow airways, and is most common among athletes who take part in endurance sports.

Researchers say extreme training could be behind the cause of developing asthma in some elite athletes.
