Theft Is Theft, Even In the Name of Patriotism
I’d like to think of myself as a very patriotic American. Not that this can be measured, but I know that I am and that is all that matters. I don’t need to prove it to anyone.
But I sometimes butt heads with people over issues involving the flag, such as my opposition to a Constitutional amendment to ban flag burning or my not running to defend people flying a flag when they KNEW their homeowner’s codes and covenants restricted them from doing so.
Now we have a case of a former Marine (I have heard that term is insulting…that you are a Marine for LIFE, but that is how the story describes him) who was disgusted by a neighbor’s display of the American flag.
Why?
Because it was hung upside down on the neighbor’s fence.
Hanging the American flag upside down is a sign of distress. Many people have done this in recent years as a sign they are not happy with the current order of things in the country and feel that the country IS under a state of distress.
Bryan Huff was working on a rental property of his when he noticed a neighbor across the street that was “disrespecting” the flag.
He took a drill and removed the flag and took it.
Nice, huh?
What gives him the right to do this?!?! I am sick to death of people saying he is a Marine and therefore somehow has a higher moral authority to determine such things.
He DOESN’T.
Yes, he served his country which is an incredible act of service and valor. Not taking that away from him or anyone.
But it does NOT give him the right to break laws or steal property.
How about the disrespect HE had for the person’s private property?? What about THEIR RIGHT??
It doesn’t matter. He feels he took the high ground and will face any consequence as a result of his actions.
Here’s some irony for you. The homeowner is himself a Navy veteran.
He flew the flag upside down because he felt under attack in his neighborhood.
You can say that again. Huff’s actions only reaffirmed that belief.
