Comedian Charles McBee joins Fox Across America With Jimmy Failla to give his take on why late-night talk shows like “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” have shifted their focus from comedy to politics over the past decade.
“I think I know where it started. I think Jon Stewart, not today’s Jon Stewart. But like the Jon, when he was, when the Daily Show was at its peak, like peak Daily Show Jon Stewart and then Colbert even when he was doing his thing, when he was Stephen Colbert on the Colbert Report. They did such an amazing job, whether you believe, you know, like the politics or not at satire, that then news anchors started copying them and thinking they were supposed to be funny. And then from that, now we got the news anchors thinking that they’re quippy, funny comedians slash news people. So then we got comedians following after the news anchor.s I mean, the whole thing is upside down. It’s like, wait a minute, hold on here. So now you can’t take news seriously anymore. So people are now looking towards comics.”
