New York Pushing Back Primaries: Why Elections Are Being Put on Hold

New York’s highest court has thrown out the state’s congressional district maps after finding Democrats guilty of ‘partisan gerrymandering’, concluding they drew maps clearly favoring their own party. As state Judge Patrick McAllister tasks Jonathan Cervas, a postdoctoral fellow at the Carnegie Mellon University Institute for Politics and Strategy, to create new maps by May 20th, New York is pushing back many of its primary elections until August. New York Republican Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis joins the Rundown to discuss how the high court’s ruling effects her campaign, why living under “one-party Democratic rule” has damaged America, and what hot-button topics she believes will be prominent at the primary elections.

The opioid epidemic is a battle that has plagued America for decades.  In recent years, mortality rates caused by overdoses among teenagers have increased, leading many to believe the dangerously potent opioid, fentanyl, to be the leading cause of these deaths.  In an effort to crack down on the crisis, the Biden administration announced $275 million in funding to stop drug smuggling operations and cultivate public safety to reduce overdoses. FentCheck is a non-profit is working to prevent these deaths through the distribution of fentanyl test strips, allowing people to detect the deadly substance in their drugs.  Alison Heller, co-founder of FentCheck, joins the Rundown to discuss the prevalence of dangerous street drugs, how the controversial approach could lessen the country’s drug problem, and why she’s advocating for more widespread accessibility to drug tests for all.
