Congressman Mike Gallagher (R-WI) joined Fox News Radio’s Guy Benson Show to discuss legislation aimed at boosting United States and Taiwanese defense cooperation as China grows more and more powerful in the region.

Congressman Gallagher said,

“Well, you know, I think at the broadest possible level, we need to wake up to the fact that Taiwan is the critical sort of area of competition for for geopolitics right now. Taiwan is a legacy issue for Xi Jinping He wants to reunify Taiwan with the mainland. Taiwan is a critical ally for us. Taiwan is a global powerhouse in terms of semiconductor manufacturing. And therefore, Taiwan is really in this new Cold War, what Berlin was in the old Cold War. It’s absolutely essential that we defend Taiwan from the aggression of the Chinese Communist Party. And so my bill, the Taiwan Partnership Act, would basically allow us to expand defense partnerships, as well as state partnership programs between our National Guard and Taiwan. And so the goal is to just turbocharge state level cooperation with Taiwan with the goal of deterring an invasion. And so a small step forward, but critical nonetheless. We have a long way to go, however, in terms of our defense bill fielding the capabilities that are necessary, be they naval capabilities or Marine Corps capabilities to prevent this invasion, which I think is increasingly likely.”
