Mike Pompeo Slams China For Human Rights Abuses: ‘This Is Not The Place That There Ought To Be An Olympic Games Held’
Listen To The Full Interview Below:
Mike Pompeo, Former Secretary of State under the Trump Administration and a current Distinguished Fellow at the Hudson Institute joined Fox News Radio’s Guy Benson Show and sounded off on Beijing hosting the 2022 winter Olympics amid egregious human rights violations. Pompeo also responded to speculation on his political future.
Mike Pompeo said,
“Well, we have some history with nations who have been permitted to host games while they were committing some of the most egregious human rights violations in the world has ever known. And that is certainly taking place today in western China, certainly against the uighur Muslims. But the denial of religious freedom all across China and the repression in Tibet, in Mongolia are real and serious. And in fact, This puts the burden back to the International Olympic Committee. This is not the place that there ought to be an Olympic Games held in 2022. Whatever decision may have been made at whatever time and based on whatever knowledge they made at the time. That’s one thing today. We know today we know the atrocities that are taking place there. We know the genocide that is occurring. And frankly, we know, too, that in the interim, the Chinese have passed a national security law which makes a criminal penalty for someone who’s engaged in subversion, thus undermining the power authority of the central government. Imagine an American athlete or a British athlete or an African athlete who had something to say about what’s happening in China. And they came to the games. They would certainly have broken Chinese law. And the risk that the Chinese might decide to make an example of them is not insignificant.”
Pompeo added,
“These are close calls. And I’ve known individuals who dedicated their entire life to focusing on the Olympics and oftentimes an individual Olympics that have won one time, that their skill set is at the top of the world’s capability. But I if I was an individual thinking about what it means to run my skill in my name and my reputation to what’s taking place in China today, I’m not sure that I would personally advocate for going. And then second, the United States must lead. The challenges that are being presented to the world are seen and evidenced every day. You talked about some there was a report just out yesterday and other independent sources isn’t politics isn’t about Republican or Democrat. This is really what’s taking place there. The United States needs to lead and we should be engaging as our administration had begun to do with the world, making the case for why, even if it requires the delaying of the games, even it requires some changes. The International Olympic Committee has an obligation to be responsible about which countries it lends its name, the prestige of hosting this glorious event, these games, the intellectual it should get right and the United States should lead. And I hope the President Biden and his team are looking at this will ultimately make the right decision about having American athletes go to the Chinese Communist Party under these games. My view is that it would be inappropriate.”
