Alan Dershowitz: Part Of Me Wishes I Joined Trump’s Impeachment Defense The Second Time
On Fox Across America with Jimmy Failla, Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz explains why he still has mixed feelings about not joining former President Trump’s impeachment defense team for the second trial at the Senate, and why he thinks the impeachment process has now been “cheapened.”
“Part of me wishes I had done it because 144 professors wrote a letter saying that if Trump’s lawyers dare to argue a First Amendment defense, they will be engaged in legally frivolous conduct, which is unethical and disbarrable. And I would have love to defy 144 professors, stand up on the floor of the Senate and say, I’ve been told the argument I’m going to make is unethical and frivolous. And here it is. It’s a strong argument. I want you to accept it. And so I have mixed feelings about whether I should be on the floor of the Senate or not.”
“We’ve cheapened impeachment. We cheapen the First Amendment. This is the greatest of all time collection of unconstitutional actions by the Senate in one day. They’re going to impeach a former president, which is illegal. They’re going to impose a bill of attainder on Donald Trump, trying him even though he’s a private citizen. They’re going to violate his First Amendment rights. They’re violating due process. There’s never been more constitutional violations by the Senate in a single day than today. It’s a scandal. And this comes from a liberal Democrat who isn’t the Trump supporter. I’m just a supporter of the Constitution.”
