Sec. of Veterans Affairs David Shulkin On Trump’s Executive Order For Veterans and Combat Veterans Coming Home With CTE
President Trump signed a new executive order Tuesday aimed to reduce suicides among veterans. The order gives the secretaries of the Defense Department, Department of Homeland Security and Veterans Affairs 60 days to develop a plan to provide, “seamless access to mental health treatment and suicide prevention resources for transitioning uniformed service members” in the year after their military service. That plan must then be implemented within 120 days. ”They get out of the military and they have nobody to talk to,” Trump said as he signed the order. “It’s a very sad situation.”
Sec. David Shulkin, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, joined The Brian Kilmeade Show today to discuss the executive order and how it will help so many veterans in need of mental health coverage. Sec. Shulkin also comments on a recent 60 Minutes piece which shows that not only NFL players are affected by the degenerative brain disease CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), but combat veterans who returned home with brain injuries are also now showing possible signs of CTE.
