Guest Faculty at the Leadership Institute’s School Board Programs Erika Donalds joins Fox Across America With guest host Paul Gleiser to explain why she believes President-elect Trump needs to eliminate the Department of Education.
“Well, when it comes to the department, there are some things that we want to continue or we will need to continue, at least until those things are phased out, such as the student loan program where the federal government is holding a lot of student loans. But that can be done through a different department, through Treasury. It is a monetary transaction. It’s not an educational transaction. Right? So that can be pushed over. When it comes to civil rights, we have an office of civil rights. We don’t need it in the Department of Education separately. That can be moved over. But when it comes to some of the programs that have been pushed down from Bush to Obama that have not improved student performance, we just eliminate it. Title one programs. Again, that’s a financial transaction. We can block grant that to the states and allow the states hopefully to distribute those funds to parents, not only to schools or districts, but to parents to empower them to use those funds for students in need for tutoring and other special services. And we’ll actually put more money into the hands of states where they can allocate it appropriately to help students.”
