Evening Edition: Should Illegal Immigrants Be Counted In The Census?
As millions of migrants continue to cross the Southern border, Republicans are pushing a bill that would keep noncitizens from being counted on the Census. The Census, taking place every ten years, decides the number of congressional seats in a state and how the federal government distributes billions of dollars in funds. Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TX) offered an amendment to a Senate funding bill last week that would have excluded illegal immigrants form the Census but it failed after 51 Democrats and Independents voted against the measure or were not present.
