On Thursday it was announced that WNBA star Brittney Griner was released from her detention in a Russian prison. Her freedom was the result of a one-for-one prisoner swap with Russia in exchange for Viktor Bout, a convicted international arms dealer. Although many Americans are celebrating Griner’s return, others are disappointed that the Biden administration could not also rescue Paul Whelan, a U.S. Marine veteran who remains imprisoned in Russia.
