LA Homelessness Worsens
The LA county homeless count was released last week for the first time since 2020.
I’ll tell you the shocking totals, next.
Since 2020, the homeless population of LA county has increased 4.1%. The latest estimates total to over 69,000 homeless in the county and nearly 42,000 in the city of LA.
How could this be? How could the fifth largest economy in the world have a ballooning homeless crisis that only worsens year after year?
It’s not a funding problem, the state of California is operating on a $100 billion budget surplus, a surplus Governor Newsom pats himself on the back for.
LA county already budgets $800 million towards the homeless crisis. And don’t forget, LA taxpayers also voted in a $1.2 billion dollar bond for homeless housing.
Yet, still, the homeless crisis continues.
And it’s not just the homeless themselves who are suffering, it’s also the good folks of southern California who, on top of paying out the nose to fund it, are also subjected to the largely mentally unstable and/or drug addicted homeless individuals who sleep on the stoops of homes, businesses and schools.
This is not a funding problem. This is a leadership problem. There is no excuse beyond that.
California is a state for the very rich and the very poor and that status quo isn’t changing anytime soon.
