On Fauci’s legacy Makary said:

“Well, I think he will he will leave several legacies. First of all, he will leave a legacy within the medical establishment and medical community as a true gentleman, he is, he sends thank you notes, he remembers names. He takes time to help people. And that is his long standing reputation within the medical field. I think in COVID, though, we saw the downsides of not having age diversity in leadership. We saw people holding on. And these people who have dinosaur views of science didn’t really listen to a younger generation. That’s more practical. Younger scientists and doctors think more in terms of social justice, inequality and what works in society and losing credibility in the public by saying something that may be too extreme. So he’s going to leave several legacies one of crushing dissent, one of staying too long, one of harming children by putting out the same message he put out with HIV that everybody is at risk. Is this as if everybody is at equal risk? And I think he’s also going to leave a legacy of not showing humility. And that’s not good. As a role model in science, I think we all need to be showing humility when we make mistakes. Own up to it.”
