Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) joined the Guy Benson Show to react to the signing of the bipartisan Senate-led deal on guns and mental health following the shooting at Uvalde elementary school in Texas. Cornyn the lead GOP negotiator of the legislation was booed at the Texas GOP convention over his bipartisan compromise.
Senator Cornyn reacted to being booed while speaking on stage at last month’s Texas GOP convention saying,
“Well, what I interpret that to mean is that we do nothing to respond to these tragedies. And I did not get elected to the Senate, nor continue to serve in the Senate for the purpose of doing nothing. I’m looking for an opportunity to find a negotiated resolution in a way that will make things better, not to leave things as they are. I think what some of the some of the misunderstanding about what was in the bill was primarily a product of some of the advocacy on the outside, where people basically did not like the idea that a Republican would talk to a Democrat about anything, much less work with them to try to come up with some sort of compromise, which, as I said, did not sacrifice Second Amendment rights, but did provide some opportunity to make good public policy.”
Cornyn added,
“So I understand this is this can be an emotional issue. There are groups on the outside that, frankly, they are proud of there. No negotiation, no compromise, no talk position. That’s fine for them. It’s a free country. They have their own First Amendment rights. But if you’re going to serve in the United States Senate and if you are concerned about the people losing faith in their public institutions, in their ability to actually function, then you have to do something. You can’t just do nothing.”
