Women’s Tennis Stands Up To China. Will Anyone Else?
In November, Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai spoke out on social media with allegations of sexual assault against a former Chinese Communist Party official. After her post went viral, it was scrubbed from her social media, and she disappeared from the public eye. Shuai then resurfaced later recanting her allegations. The Women’s Tennis Association was quick to act, demanding investigations, proof of Shuai’s wellbeing, and suspending all tournaments in China. Professional tennis player, broadcaster and coach Patrick McEnroe joins to discuss how the tennis community is responding in full force to China’s censorship of Peng Shuai, clues signaling China is now controlling and silencing the tennis star and why the WTA is taking action despite the monetary consequence.
