Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) On Gun Purchase Background Checks: We’re Not Banning Weapons, We’re Not Creating Lists. It’s Just Simply Saying That We Should All Be Treated The Same
Eight House Republicans broke from their party last week and joined Democrats to support a bill that would expand background check requirements for gun purchases and transfers. One of those Republicans, Rep. Adam Kinzinger join the Guy Benson Show today and explained his vote.
He said the following:
“Obviously, I’m very aggressive Second Amendment defender, but, you know, 85 percent or whatever it is, 80, 85 percent of guns that are bought. You go through a background check. Any time you go to a gun dealer, you go through a background check. It’s, you know, three day background check. And there is a real argument to be made that there is that loophole of if I would buy a gun from you now, I’m not susceptible to that. And so all this would do was to say outside of the family and some other exceptions, if you would purchase a gun, you have to get a background check and it’s not linked in in the background check. I’ve seen a lot of misinformation that this creates some national database, which it doesn’t do and is expressly prohibited. But I just think this is why is public policy. I can see why people disagree. But I think it’s wise public policy to say, look, if you go and you buy a gun from Wal-Mart and then you buy a gun from your neighbor down the street, there is really no reason that you shouldn’t go through the same kind of background check. We’re not, you know, banning you know, we’re not banning weapons, we’re not creating lists. It’s just simply saying that should all be treated the same. And I’m comfortable with that decision”.
Rep. Kinzinger also weighed in on Vaccine distribution in his state & the fallout of his impeachment vote & the Beijing Olympics.
