Vipp’s World of Nonsense: Defending the N-Word?
In a conversation with Oprah, Jay-Z defended the use of the N-Word by saying that it is people who give words power and that he has taken the power out of the N-Word.
Jay-Z, you haven’t taken the power out of the N-word because you have used it to your financial and artistic advantage. So therefore, you have given the N-Word more power -exactly the opposite of what you have claimed to do.
Jay-Z also stated that he has turned the N-Word from being ugly and hurtful into a term of endearment. Really, Jay-Z, is that the best you can come up with? Because if Paula Deen and the others claimed to use it as a term of endearment, would their consequences have been different?
And then to top it all off, he said that if we remove words from the dictionary then we don’t address the problem of discrimination.
Well, Jay-Z, if you look at the dictionary, the N-word is considered to be one of the most offensive words in the English language. Doing wrong is wrong for all and not just wrong for some. Otherwise, that really would be discrimination.
