Who Needs Real Life?
One of the most amazing amusement park rides I have ever been on is SOARIN’ OVER CALIFORNIA at Disneyland’s sister park, California Adventure.
I’ve been in simulators before, but NOTHING like this. It give you the impression that you are literally soaring over many of California’s most scenic spots. From the redwoods to southern California surf, from the Golden Gate Bridge to Yosemite. A jumbo screen in front of you tricks your senses into believing you are in mid air witnessing all of this splendor.
And of course, we ARE talking about the magic of Disney. So don’t be surprised when you actually SMELL the evergreeens, surf, and orange blossoms.
The ride PUTS you there. It was a beautiful and unique experience.
But as incredible as this ride is, it may soon be eclipsed by a virtual reality headset that promises to be the real deal.
Although scientists have been tinkering with virtual reality for many years, this headset will depict all FIVE senses!
So picture this…taking a virtual vacation anywhere in the world…being able to experience it with all of your senses. It would allow you to communicate with loved ones across the country or across the globe. Forget e-mails and instant messages and web cams. We are talking about a family reunion where it’s as if your relatives were IN the room with you. That might be a good or a bad thing, depending on how well you get along with your family.
This contraption would even allow you to visit historical periods and sights…recreated for you to explore. Imagine roaming with the dinosaurs or being in the room as the Constitution is being signed. And feeling ALL of it. Every thrilling moment with all of your senses!
The headset should be available in 3-5 years. And the cost? Roughly $3,000 to $5,000.
Oh, and those are REAL dollars. Not virtual ones. Sorry.
