LGBT Discrimination Provision Kills House Spending Bill

    A provision adding protections for gay and transgender employees upends a spending bill.

    Conservative backlash over an amendment barring discrimination against gay, lesbian and transgender employees of federal contractors was enough to kill a $37 billion energy and water projects funding bill:

    (Ryan) “We brought this up, we let the place work its will.”

    House Speaker Paul Ryan complains Democrats torpedoed the overall spending bill. But 130 Republicans also voted no after the LGBT protections were added by a bipartisan vote last night.

    The same amendment was narrowly defeated last week after several Republicans switched votes, prompting cries of shame from Democrats.
