WPS: How One Man Cancelled A Pro Sports League’s Season
The NFL and NBA narrowly avoided losing their seasons this year in disputes between players and owners. But another sport, one where the players don’t take home multi-million dollar paychecks, isn’t so lucky, calling off an entire season because of a dispute with a single owner.

Women’s Pro Soccer is pulling the plug on its 2012 season, focusing the league’s resources instead on legal action with MagicJack founder Dan Borislow. Borislow’s team – named after his telephone service product – was terminated in October after multiple fines from WPS for violating various league protocols, leading to the lawsuit.
(Averbuch) “There’s a lot of anger out there directed towards that situation and that particular owner.”
Players, like Yael Averbuch, are hopeful they’ll be back on the field in 2013.
(Averbuch) “I think that the league is very helpful to building women’s soccer culture in this country.”
League crowds saw a bump after last year’s World Cup, with record crowds last weekend for Olympic qualifying finals.
