With Christmas right around the corner, 52% of Americans plan to give gifts at work. We have some tips to help you avoid office gift-giving mistakes that could ruin your career.

FOX Business Network’s Cheryl Casone gives us the lowdown:

To you bosses out there– don’t pick and choose people to give gifts to. Either do one gift for the entire staff, or be discreet if you really feel the need to do something extra for one employee.

Employees– don’t give something too expensive or extravagant to your boss. It will make them uncomfortable and make you look like a suck-up. A definite don’t in the work world.

One big mistake? Re-gifting. Especially among co-workers. Secret Santa gifts are not a joke, so try to be gracious and take home that colorful pair of socks. Give them to charity, but not to another co-worker next year.

Finally, think twice before doing gag gifts at the office. It’s a little unprofessional, and in some cases can be offensive depending on what you give. For instance, giving chocolate to someone who is trying to lose a little weight.
