UPDATE: The six-year-old boy who had been shot has died.

A six-year-old in New Jersey is in serious, but stable condition after being shot in the head apparently by his four-year-old neighbor.

FOX News Radio’s Courtney Kealy reports:

Toms River Police in New Jersey are investigating how the four-year-old obtained the .22-caliber rifle from his family’s home. Authorities say the two children were outside the four-year-old’s home on Monday night. The boy went inside, got the rifle and shot the six-year-old from about 15 yards away. It’s not clear if he pulled the trigger or if it was an accidental discharge. The parents of the four-year-old were at home at the time of the shooting.
