FL Teen Jailed For Flipping Off Judge [VIDEO]
Sometimes people – like this Florida teen – just need to learn their lessons the hard way.
FOX News Radio’s Chris Hoenig has her story:
Audio clip:
Eighteen-year-old Penelope Soto giggling her way though a hearing after being arrested for possessing Xanax bars.
(Judge Rodriguez-Chomat) “It’s not a joke, you know. We’re not in a club now.”
Bond initially set at $5,000.
(Judge Rodriguez-Chomat // Soto) “Bye, bye.” // “Adios!”
Not the attitude the judge was expecting, though.
(Judge Rodriguez-Chomat) “Come back, ma’am. Come back.”
Miami Circuit Judge Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat.
(Judge Rodriguez-Chomat // Soto) “Count One will be $10,000.” // “Are you serious?” // “I am serious. Adios!”
At this point, Soto flips the judge the bird and has a few choice words.
(Judge Rodriguez-Chomat // Soto) “Did you say ((expletive)) me? Did you say that?” // “Yes, sir!”
Soto’s punishment:
(Judge Rodriguez-Chomat) “Thirty days in the county jail.”
…For criminal contempt. And after she serves that, she’ll face the same judge, again.

Go Judge! Obviously, no one taught this girl to respect authority or her elders. About time someone did…

She got what she deserved! Such disrespect from her!

Disrespect caused by the judges emotional unstability and abuse of power. set bond to $5,000 the they parted their way and adios ticked him off to double the fine? Rediculous. from the sound of it, there was no intention to piss off the judge when parting. Man with power only abuses it more.

Don't agree with this teens disrespectful, inappropriate behavior but this judge is a joke also! Definitely a misuse and abuse of power & authority. How about freedom of speak!

This judge is not a nice guy and seems disrepectfull himself. What ever happened to justice for the people? Where was her attorney? Is she habitual? What r the circumstanses for such a high bail? Vote this man off the bench! I know about justice. I raised my hand and picked up my gun. Fought my war!

That judge was taking the situation a bit personal. She is getting punished anyways and when she said "Adios" it did not even sound as sarcasim towards the judge. I do agree on the misuse and abuse of power & authority. what does jewlery price have to do with her prescription drug possesion?

You have to respect the cort.
Your being judge.
It's up to the judge to decide your punishment .

if you are excepting the outcome the first time and being called backed for a ruling that can piss off a person on purpose sort of is outrageous. if judge is to decide the punishment, it should be objective not based on power.

ABC news is claiming that this Judge is viewed as a "hero" in southern Miami….. This judge is NOT a hero, he is a disgrace. We elect judges into their positions trusting that they are of sound mind and body. Trusting that they will be free from bias and personal opinion. He allowed his emotions to take over his logic. What she did was childish and immature…and his response was equally as immature. 30 days worth of tax payers' money because he was easily offended. Sad, not heroic.

Yea well she thought it was funny and abused the court system… So now he she doesn't learn anything else she will learn to shut up in front of a judge, and this should be a slight rehab/detox for the teen (who by the way is there because of her poor decisions, I don't feel bad for her at all

Abuse of power whatever happen to freedom of speech 10k fine for a few pills wow

It wasn't a $10K fine. It was a $10K bond and the judge was well within his rights to assign that amount. And her 30 day sentence has nothing to do with her crime but rather for her blatant contempt of court. You don't flip off a judge and expect not to be punished for doing it. And just for the record, she forfeited her right to freedom of speech the moment she admitted to possessing the pills. Maybe this little brat will learn a valuable lesson and do some thinking about where her life is headed while she's locked up. She might also want to keep in mind that the judge is not done with her yet. Unless he violates or ignores the sentencing guidelines set forth by the state, which he hasn't, he's done nothing wrong as far as the criminal justice system is concerned. Truth be told, he may very well have done this girl a favor. Clearly, the $5K bond ($500 cash) had no effect on her. Let's hope that 30 days in lock-up will.

Very well said and I agree with you 100%. There is absolutely no way I would have acted that way toward a judge when I was 18. I have no idea what is going on with the current generation of young people. A lot of them seem to think everything is a game and they act like there are no consequences for their actions. This little Brat is headed to prison or death, if something does not change! The Judge gave her just what she deserved and needed! Maybe this will straighten her out a little.

I believe this is a case of racial discrimination and this judge should be punished in the county jail for 30 days and and receive a 100,00 dollar or more in fines for his unlawful actions. You can see the person who being trialed can not speak English very well. I believe any news channel that post this should be helping this person and not discriminated against this individual. FCC or other organizations should fine these news channels for promoting hate against Hispanics.

Did you even read the story or watch any of the video? The Judge is of Hispanic descent. "Miami Circuit Judge, Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat", obviously a Hispanic name and if you listen to the discussion between the judge and the defendant, both speak with a Hispanic accent and both speak English fluently with absolutely no trouble! You should find some where else to Troll!

So what he abused his power, everybody with common sense knows that court is not the place to play… U are there to be JUDGED, and if u act lhumble enough he can show u mercy if u thinks a joke the JUDGE can show u how funny it is… Too bad everyone's opinion or what they feel is Justice doesn't matter, we don't get paid to judge, however HE DOES LOL

All because she simply said Adios? I learned my lesson; never say a friendly Farewell in Spanish after a judge says "Bye Bye" or I will be double fined. As long as we have judges like this people will continue to lose respect for the system. And no, I'm not saying she is right in her response to this decision. With no priors now she has 30 days to learn from the real criminals and emerge an even more disrespectful human being. Thanks judge for showing her the ropes.

What would have happened if the girl had said "good bye" instead of "adios"? Didn't the judge take it personally because he is Hispanic? If that is the case, isn't his judgement biased?

That is a bias and sexist judge. He sentenced her based on what her jewelry costs? Wtf kind of judge does that. And why is he handg out jailtime for contempt when he s not being that tough for her drug charge and y did she keep coming back I would have kept walking
