IRS Pays Whistleblower More Than $100 Million

Help out the government, and the government will help you…big.  The IRS is paying out a record amount to a convicted tax cheat under its tax whistleblower law.

A former Swiss banker who spilled secrets about overseas tax cheats and Swiss bank UBS AG is awarded $104 million by the Internal Revenue Service.  Bradley Birkenfeld’s award, thought to be the largest amount ever paid to an individual whistleblower, but still just a fraction of the nearly $800 million UBS had to cough up in fines, penalties and other settlements.

Birkenfeld himself served more than two years behind bars for a fraud conspiracy conviction related to the case, which was part of a broad push by the U.S. to crack down on American tax dodgers with illegal offshore accounts.
