Severe Drought Raises Government Concerns [VIDEO]

The U.S. Agriculture Secretary says if a prayer or rain dance would help, he’d do it to end the drought that has gripped a large section of the country.

Tom Vilsack says as fields dry up and feed prices spike, help is needed from Congress to pass a food, farm, and jobs Bill. He says the President has ordered streamlining of the emergency declaration process and the opening up of new opportunities for haying and grazing. Vilsack says while crop farmers are facing hardships, it’s even worse for those who raise animals.

Vilsack: “Because they simply don’t have any disaster program and there’s no such thing as a crop insurance program for livestock producers.”

Little immediate relief in sight in the form of any measurable rainfall from the Dakotas down to New Mexico and East to Tennessee and Georgia.
