Housecall for Health: “Shocking” Depression Treatment

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that hundreds of millions of people worldwide have some form of depression, with about 15 million cases coming from American adults.  Now researchers overseas have found a “shocking” way to treat it.

FOX’s Colleen Cappon reports in today’s “Housecall for Health”:

Scientists have rediscovered a controversial – but effective – treatment for depression: shock therapy.  Researchers in Scotland find that electroconvulsive therapy, or ECT, weakens communication between parts of the brain that cause depression.

Doctors say ECT has come a long way, and is a painless treatment, which electrically induces seizures after a patient is sedated.  Trials even showed improvement in those who were severely depressed.
