Housecall for Health: Number of Alcoholic Surgeons Surging

A new survey shows a higher rate of alcohol issues among one surprising group, above that of the general population.  That group: surgeons.

FOX’s Colleen Cappon reports in today’s “Housecall for Health”:

New research suggests that when the going gets tough, some surgeons hit the bottle.  A survey from the University of Washington of 25,000 surgeons showed that 15% have alcohol problems.  That’s 6% higher than the general population.

Experts estimate the reason is alcohol helps surgeons cope with the stressful business.  The good news: physicians who go into rehab show very high recovery rates.
