Big Win? Cindy Hyde-Smith's victory Tuesday night in the Mississippi Senate runoff shores up the GOP's majority in the upper chamber and could help them avoid a repeat of the drama that surrounded the confirmation of now-Justice Brett Kavanaugh for future judicial picks. Hyde-Smith, who was appointed earlier this year by Mississippi's governor to fill retiring Sen. Thad Cochran's seat, handily defeated insurgent Democratic challenger Mike Espy in the special election runoff with a commanding margin of 54.4 percent to 45.6 percent, according to state election officials. While the GOP lost control of the House in this month's midterms, it gained seats in the Senate and Hyde-Smith's win means the advantage will increase to 53-47.

Fail! The Senate again blocked an expedited vote on legislation that would protect special counsel Robert Mueller from being fired.  Sens. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz.; Chris Coons, D-Del., and Cory Booker, D-N.J., urged brisk debate on the legislation in an effort to prevent President Donald Trump from firing Mueller.  Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah objected to the request, blocking immediate action. Lee said the bill was unconstitutional. Lee said if such a bill were passed it would "fundamentally (undermine) the principle of separation of powers" and create a "de facto fourth branch of government."  This was the second attempt to get a vote on the legislation.

Madam Speaker? House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) claimed victory on Wednesday, saying she had won the Democratic nomination for Speaker amid an entrenched rebellion from insurgent lawmakers who pose the starkest threat to her long reign atop the party.
