A defiant President Trump rallied with his base for more than an hour Tuesday in Arizona, trashing the media over its coverage of his response to the recent violence in Charlottesville, Va., while criticizing the state's Republican senators for not getting behind him. Trump was most animated when defending himself against accusations he wasn't forceful enough in condemning the white supremacists and racists who were protesting in Charlottesville earlier this month. He blamed the media for distorting his comments. At one point, the president pulled a piece of paper out of his jacket and re-read his initial statements condemning the racists involved the protests. Lt. Col. Tony Shaffer, a CIA-trained former senior intelligence officer, joined the Todd Starnes Show today to discuss Trump's performance last night as well as to respond to comments made by former DNI James Clapper regarding Trump's fitness to be in office. Shaffer said, "This is just one more attempt of James Clapper to be in with the cool kids, doing what cool kids do in liberal media." He went on to say Clapper is "just not a smart guy" and "anytime he speaks people ought to really take a step back and worry about what he's saying." Shaffer also commented on the left-wing media's penchant for attacking Trump and twisting his words, saying, "This is very dangerous... There is only a handful of outlets that are actually trying to focus on the truth."
