I'm getting stoked about two Republican candidates--Jon Huntsman and Herman Cain.
Huntsman first. He impresses me because he impresses liberals. Mark Helperin of Time Magazine says this guy is the real thing and, paraphrasing now, if he lives up to his potential he will be the next president of the United States. That's pretty heady stuff coming from somebody who spends a lot of time praising Barack Obama.
Some people are going to call Huntsman a RINO. I don't know if he is or isn't. I do know that it's going to take someone with wide appeal to beat Obama.
As for Herman Cain, he raises this question: will minority voters ALWAYS vote Democrat? Can Herman Cain draw some black voters away from Barack Obama? I think he might be able to do that ... he's smart, successful, and inspirational to black people in his own right.
The question is whether the impulse toward racial solidarity would work as well for Herman Cain as it did for Barack Obama.
