The New Year is a time to look forward to what's to come, and time to reflect on what's been.  With that, we take a look back what was the year 2010 on Twitter...

News and sports captivated the nation...and the Twitter-verse in 2010.  The top trend...your twoppic of the year...is the Gulf Oil Spill.  The most retweeted tweet of the year came from TV personality Stephen Colbert on that very subject---on June 16th, Colbert tweeted...

The next 3 most retweeted tweets came from musicians, with Drake in at #2 and Lil Wayne announcing his return to Twitter at #3...

In at #4 on the most retweeted tweets is the man...or young man, I should say...who carried the most influence on Twitter in 2010...  Justin Bieber, whose followers created their own nickname...Bliebers.  In addition to the #4 tweet coming from him...

The #6...

And #9 tweets...

...were also about him.  Bieber was also the 8th most popular trend and #1 among people trending on Twitter for the year.

One honor he doesn't hold, though...Is the title of the most followed person on Twitter.  Lady Gaga took over that place this year, now with more than 7.5 MILLION followers.  Gaga also had the #7 most retweeted tweet of 2010...

...And was #3 among the most trending people.

Rounding out the top 10 retweeted tweets...an apology from a music star for a famous awards show moment...

Kanye's apology to Taylor Swift coming in at #7.  #5 went to a mock Al-Qaeda twitter...

And #10 comes from an account that led to the show "Stuff My Dad Says."

Topping off the 10 biggest trends of the year...

Soccer's World Cup, which held 3 of the top 10 spots.  The World Cup itself came in at #2, Vuvuzela at #5, and Paul the Psychic Octopus took 10th place...wonder if he saw that coming?

2010 also brought new faces to Twitter...

Conan O'Brien popped up in February, just a month after his run on NBC ended.  Bill Gates and the Dalai Lama also got their first tweets in 2010...as did LeBron James, who joined in the run up to his big "decision"...
