Twoppics, the stories behind the hottest topics on Twitter.
Hot twoppic of the moment - some hot dog drama over the weekend at the annual Nathan's Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest on Coney Island. Takeru Kobayashi was arrested when he stormed the stage after his arch rival Joey "Jaws" Chestnut took the title. Kobabyashi was barred from the tournament after he refused to sign a contract that he says said he could not eat in other competitions. As for the winner, who ingested a gut wrenching 54 hot dogs in ten minutes.
Hot twoppic of the day is Bharat Band, a general strike happening Monday in India to protest the government's recent fuel prices hike and the rising food inflation. In most areas, it was a long weekend, with offices and schools closed, taxis and rickshaws not running, and vendors nowhere to be found. Twitter was full of tweets from Indians giving accounts of the strike, and tweeting opinions about the situation. @ManishPajan tweeted Glimpsed Utopia this morning. Home 2 office (27km) in 35mins, due 2 Bharat Bandh (strike). Sad we need a strike to enjoy peaceful drives.
Hot twoppic of the week is the weekend box office, which was ruled by the vampires...The Twilight Saga: Eclipse took in $161.7 million since it opened on Wednesday, which was no real surprise. But one shocker: the critical panned The Last Airbender has taken in $53.2 million so far.
