Twoppics, the stories behind the hottest topics on twitter.
Your hot twoppic of the moment and day is Haiti, after a devastating earthquake hit the country on Tuesday, destroying most of the capital city Port-au-Prince. The quake destroyed many public buildings, and all hospitals had been damaged or collapsed. And some reports estimate the death toll at hundreds of thousands. Leading in the effort to help the impoverished country, President Obama pledged assistance.
Twitter is also proliferating ways to help Haiti, tweeting links to donate to the relief effort. You can donate $10 by texting "HAITI" to "90999." The $10 donation will be charged directly to your cell phone bill and will go automatically to the Red Cross. Another way to help: @ wyclef jean tweeted Help Haiti Earthquake Relief Donate $5 by texting YELE to 501 501 right now please RT. Other celebrities are using their reach to tell their many followers to help: @adamlambert tweets Please, everyone donate even the smallest of what you can. We are so fortunate. Let us give where truly needed.www.unicefusa.org/haitiquake
Your hot twoppic of the week is Google, after it announced that it will no longer self-censor in China. Google offered to censor itself several years ago after being frustrated by government blocks on the search engine. Now Google.cn is retrieving results for sensitive topics including the 1989 crackdown at Tiananmen Square. Google made the decision following cyber attacks targeting G-mail accounts of Chinese human rights activists. The company says the attacks, "have led us to conclude that we should review the feasibility of our business operations in China."
