Facebook has issued an apology after threatening to shut down a “Chicks on the Right” fan page over a posting that was critical of the Obama Administration.
“Chicks on the Right” is a popular conservative website that boasts more than 90,000 fans on their Facebook page.
Earlier today, one of the two women who run the site, received a notice that she was locked out of her personal Facebook page as well as administrative functions on the “Chicks on the Right” page because a posting had violated the company’s standards.
Facebook responded once Fox News reported on the incident. Click here to read our original story.
“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience,” Facebook spokesman Fred Wolens told Fox News. “Unfortunately, the users were incorrectly warned by our User Operation’s Team and we have already removed all associated blocks from the accounts.”
Mockarena, who runs the website with Daisy, confirmed to Fox News that Facebook had lifted the blocks on both pages. Both ladies asked that their real names not be used for security concerns.
Wolens said their team reviews millions of pieces of content every day – and chalked up what happened to an innocent mistake.
“This team looks at hundreds of thousands of reports every week, and as you might expect, occasionally, we make a mistake and block a piece of content we shouldn’t have,” he said.
However, in the few hours since the original report was posted, Fox News has heard from a number of readers who said they’ve also been subjected to Facebook blocks over conservative content.
The controversy started over a posting on the Chick’s Facebook fan page that referred readers to a website posting titled, “You Know What? Liberal Hypocrisy is Starting to Cause Me Actual Physical Pain.”
“Jay Carney can kiss my assular area,” wrote Mockarena, who runs the website with Daisy, a medical writer and adjunct professor of communications.
“I think people are starting to realize Facebook is not necessarily a safe place for conservatives,” Mockarena told Fox News.
She said she tried to log onto her Facebook page Tuesday morning and learned that access not both her personal account and “The Chicks on the Right” account had been temporarily blocked.”
“We removed the following content you posted or were the admin of because it violates Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities,” read a screen-grab she posted.
At the heart of the matter – the ladies who run the website believe there’s another motive behind the threat.
“They are targeting conservatives,” Mockarena said.
She also believes liberals “who are hell-bent on silence conservatives” are trolling conservative pages and reporting specific posts.
“All those reports get funneled into Facebook and with enough complaints the pages are then shut down,” she said.
And there are plenty of vulgar Facebook pages directed at conservatives including:
“F*** Mitt Romney
“Tea Party Can Kiss My A**”
“Rush Limbaugh is an Abject A******”
So why haven’t those sites been taken down?
As a result of the incident, the “Chicks” have launched a new social networking site on TeaPartyCommunity.com.
“The experience is very similar to Facebook,” she said. “We are hoping to drive traffic there because we know it’s a safe place.”
