A Massachusetts resident is protesting his town’s decision not to fly American flags from utility poles on Sept. 11 this year, part of a policy to recognize the anniversary of the terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people with the flags only every five years.

MassLive.com reports that the flags in Amherst were flown last year to mark the 10th anniversary of the attack and will be flown again in 2016.

The board had voted to fly small flags on the light posts downtown on only six holidays every year. Resident Larry Kelley thinks 9/11 should become the seventh.

Tony Maroulis, executive director of the Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce, supports Kelley’s suggestion.

“I understand how polarizing the flag can be in this community. Some might look at the flags as a brazen symbol of might and oppression,” Maroulis said. “Others look at it as a source of pride in who we are, and what we can be. Whatever the complicated or simplistic responses to the flags, flying them on 9/11 would allow us to reflect and meditate upon them.”

Cinda Jones, president of Cowls Companies, wrote that the current configuration seems like “wishy-washy Amherst compromise at best.”

“That timing says to me that Amherst believes 9/11 is occasionally worthy of remembrance and respect, but 4/5 of the time it’s not,” Jones wrote. “Well, it either is, or it isn’t. You don’t celebrate or commemorate something worthwhile every five years.”

Town Manager John Musante said the board represents the “entire community, and there’s a difference of opinions within the community.”

Musante said flags at municipal sites are flown at half-staff and the fire department holds its annual commemoration at 9:55 a.m. on Sept. 11 at the station to mark the date.

  1. America is in Critical condition.

  2. I'm sorry, but I would fly my flag regardless of what they say. Folks are protected under the Constitution, and it's their Right to be able to fly our flag with pride.
We need to stop letting the Lefties demonize our flag. It stands for Freedom. It helped us win two World Wars, and has helped my own family through trying times.
When we got hit by the tornado back on April 27th 2011, the first thing we did was find our flag. Our house was gone, we were bruised and cut, but our Spirit was not broken! We raised our flag, and our neighbors soon followed suit (mostly ones not hit as hard as us). This was our house in Toney, AL after an EF4 hit us (my mother, father, brother, husband, and I all survived it)- http://imgur.com/wMMHk.

So fly your flag in the name of Freedom, regardless of where you're at. The government, local or not, will NOT break us just because of their "feelings" or opinions.

What a sick comment. This flag means freedom, freedom my husband foought wars for.

Do you forget that under this flag women were not able to vote for a long time. And slavery was legal?

Not everything done under this flag was right.

That's why we always strive for a "more perfect union".

What sorry bunch of un-American flag haters. Who would have ever thought than in this day and age the there would be disgust, disdain, hate, and major disagreements from within over the flying of Old Glory. We do a better job of destroying our own country better than our enemies ever could.

    • Jay Shepherd /

      Joel Rivera
Flag haters? Because this one guy wants flags posted EVERY year? 9/11 is NOT a national holiday. I'm glad to see you want tax payer dollars spent by the government whenever someone is not happy about what is going on.

I think we should raise taxes on you.

That is, IF you made any money.

    • Paula Hall /

Jay Shepherd I think we should boycott liberal businesses. That will show where the true money is coming from.

What a heartless bastard you are. 3000 people died that day, it's a national tragedy and I'm sure the dead as well as the living would have no problem flying Old Glory. By the way, your lord god McKenyan desires the spreading of your wealth that you didn't earn on your own. Maybe you can purchase a flag for those less fortunate. Real Americans, civilian and military alike are dead and its sad to see indifference exist in a town as well as someone like yourself while not giving a damn. Funny that you mention one person being not too happy about this. At least this person has more love of country, is more sensible and wants to honor the victims by doing something worthwhile. It's a more honorable act than a single, hateful, and angry bigot being unhappy that people of faith are serving their community that they got to call some out of state bullies to say you cant do this or that. The nation is full of insensitive careless hating idiots like yourself and these town leaders.

    • Jay Shepherd /

It's NOT a HOLIDAY, you idiot. And the town DOES recognize 9-11, just not as ofter as this ONE GUY wants. When did conservatives become so stupid?

    • Paula Hall /

@Jay Shepherd How can you be so unfeeling and insensitive to all the people that lost their lives, and all this great country stands for and believes in? You would think you would at least have a spec of gratitude.

    • Jay Shepherd /

I'm not being insensitive to anyone except this idiot that wants to force his will on the city and the taxpayers.

    • Jay Shepherd /

      Joel Rivera
The town DOES commemorate 9-11 EVERY YEAR, just not the way this ONE GUY wants them to:

Musante said flags at municipal sites are flown at half-staff and the fire department holds its annual commemoration at 9:55 a.m. on Sept. 11 at the station to mark the date.

      Joel, you LOSE again.

    • Joel Rivera /

      Vajayjay
This town does fine making their own excuses without your help. Every 5 years is unacceptable, but then they're free to be heartless and un-American as they want, they just better be prepared for the criticisms that come their way.

    • Jay Shepherd /

      Joel Rivera
Joel, learn to READ. The town commemorates 9-11 EVERY YEAR. Do you know what ANNUAL means???

Do you know what EVERY YEAR means? Are you really THAT brain-dead?

"Musante said flags at municipal sites are flown at half-staff and the fire department holds its annual commemoration at 9:55 a.m. on Sept. 11 at the station to mark the date."

    • Paula Hall /

@ jay Shepherd RE: I'm not being insensitive to anyone except this idiot that wants to force his will on the city and the taxpayers. How dare you use this argument when your side demands we pay for all of your social programs to the point of funding contraceptives for you guys to have your jollies.

    • Jay Shepherd /

      Paula Hall
The PILL (not unlike you) should be covered under ANY health plan. It have other uses besides birth control. I guess you would just rather a poor mother have a child that she could not support so my tax dollars would have to pay for the social programs she uses.

      You are very short sighted?

    • Does this town fly flags on utility poles on December 7th. every year? Do they at least fly their flag half staff on December 7th. How about on April 19th. ?

    • Paula Hall /

@ Jay Shepherd — So you would impose your standards of murdering unborn babies on Christians too? Eh???

    • murdering unborn babies??? Fetuses have no consciousness till 25 weeks at least, its like a parasite till then.

    • Joel Rivera /

      Richards Omar
You have no conscience then and your just as big as a parasite.

    • Joel Rivera /

      Vajayjay
Now now son, your president did say to spread your wealth, so get to spreading idiot box.

    • Joel Rivera " big as a parasite" what does that mean? is that oxymoron, and if sob what does it mean? BTW my conscience support women's choice till the fetus develop a sense of consciousnesses .without consciousness = no awareness.. no awareness = pretty much a veg…

    • Paula Hall /

@ Richards Omar – What horrible darkness and a little world you live in.

    • Paula Hall it looks pretty bright to me! LOL Issac passed and the sun is shinning and i hear birds and if i'm not mistaken i saw a humming bird outside, what are you talking about my world seem pretty bright and it is better since i don't have to pay child support thanks to my pro-choice exes :)

    • Paula Hall /

@ Richards Omar: RE: t thanks to my pro-choice exes :) How many exes have you had? That's exactly what I'm referring to. Evidently they were not real happy with you and your version of sunshine. And all the freebie sex in the world didn't make them want to stay.

    • Jay Shepherd /

Lots of christians have abortions. And they should have that right. That choice is NONE of the government's business.

Don't want an abortion? Then don't have one.

    • Jay Shepherd /

      Joel Rivera
It's idiots like you that want to ban abortion and then give no safety net for the resulting children IF they need it. You all just do not live in reality.

    • Joel Rivera /

      Richards Omar
You call the unborn a parasite, well you were once that parasite as you call it and you still are. You call it an oxymoron, I call you an honest to goodness moron. You are disgusting as much as those who who propose after birth abortions. You have no conscience, therefore you are not human you pathetic son of a b1tch. Speak about choice, it never discriminates, sees no race nor age whether young or old. If you love choice, then I challenge you to take an unborn out of the womb and tear it apart, and if you can still eat your lunch and get a good nite sleep, then your a monster unworthy of life.

    • Paula Hall /

@ Jay Shepard RE: It's idiots like you that want to ban abortion and then give no safety net for the resulting children IF they need it. You all just do not live in reality. No, its you who live in a cycle of systemic hate. Murder of unborn babies is hate, unfaithfulness to your marriage mate is hate, destroying the morale of our country is hate. Whereas Christianity teaches chastity, which produces love for innocent unborns, love for wives, which extends to love for our fellow citizens & country. We live in reality unless you equate reality with hate.

Becareful wishing on others what you dont wish for yourself. Keep on assuming because you dont know nothing about me and you never will. • yeah cause humiliating gang rape to strangers and lack of hospitality to others could not possibly be the reason the people in the city were considered to be unrighteous … and ALL of Moses' culture laws are followed by Christians even to this day… ( sarcasm) remember the pharisees were blinded by there own laws, which made them blind to the grace of their god (From the perceptive of Christians)

You know it's way too hard to talk about what's right with our politicians whether they be local or federal. It ought not be so. There is a much easier way and once the ball gets rolling will be very easy. FaceBook would facilitate communication immeasurably. We can still vote with our money. Each dollar counts as a vote. Our politicians have fashioned us into a consumer society. So, let's consume only those things which meet with our high moral standards. Yes it would take work to discover which companies are manufacturing in harmony with our vision. And yes, the left will follow our example. We would then have a nation divided. But those who do not adhere to Holy Scripture have a curse remaining on them. That curse includes poverty. We could see just how far they can get when they can't steal and control our money. It would also be the greatest witnessing too ever. People would clearly see the difference between Christians and unbelievers. I went into ACE Hardware and asked the owner if ACE sources for American made products. She said they do. That's a beginning. She is also president of the ACE Hardware stores in the area and a strong Christian to boot. The service and cleanliness in her store was phenomenal. Lowes and Home Depot could boast nothing on her. That's a beginning. And we know where Chic Fil A stands. People of God stop giving your money to causes and people who do not honor God and search out the many worthy businesses that built our country and keep it strong.

  7. Paula Hall /

To add a bit more to my 1st post; All would then be able to see the difference that Christians put into quality when they manage and own businesses by following Jesus Golden Rule of doing unto others as we would have them do unto us. Not cutting short crucial processes and components or creating only products that look good on the surface only to make a fast profit. Making everyone want to buy only Christian created products. The leftist politicians' mouths then would be shut closed. And we will have won our battle.

    • Jay Shepherd /

      Paula Hall
The Golden Rule is NOT found in the bibLIE.

      You are confused.

what's your point Jay??? you called me ignorant several times & then when i showed you up, you refuse to do the decent & gentlemanly thing by admitting that you were wrong & i was right? Maybe that's why your wives divorced you???? ehhh?

YOU were the first to call me ignorant with your comment "Oh get out. Ignorance is as ignorance does."

You sound mentally ill. You need to take some of those medications you have on your facebook page!

    • Paula Hall /

@ jay Shepherd – No, I just want you to apologize for calling me ignorant, making me prove that the Golden Rule is in Scripture and admit I'm right. For that you call me mentally ill? That's a natural desire and one that a gentleman would freely do.

You mean like they do IN THE BIBLE?

Yes, I agree, the bible is filled with all sorts of cruel and torturous things!

    • Paula Hall /

@ jay Shepherd – What is WRONG with you? The very theme of the Bible is Chastity. And before you go off and insult me again by telling me it's not in there, do yourself a favor and be nice because there are hundreds if not thousands of Scriptures supporting the Bible's theme as Chastity.

    • Jay Shepherd /

      Paula Hall
The bible advocates the horrible treatment of women, including widows that are forced to marry and have sex with their brother-in-laws if her husband dies.

You really do not know the bibLIE very well.

    • Paula Hall /

You've got to be kidding me Jay. No, REALLY. The only place where women are treated at all decently is in Christian lands where the Bible is followed. Brother-in-Law marriage was to protect the finances of families through land inheritance. A woman's greatest treasure in ancient history was to bear children. This kept families from slipping into poverty & the son became the son of the deceased and inherited his land. The woman and the family were very happy with the arrangement. It is only when you look at the past through the jaded eyes of today where children are not prized as in ancient times that you cannot understand the beauty of its meaning.

    • Jay Shepherd /

      Paula Hall
You support incest and rape. And so does the bibLIE.

Women are treated Horrifically in the bibLIE.

You really should read and understand the bibLIE before you become an apologist for it.

    • Paula Hall /

how can the Bible or I support incest and rape if I just told you the theme of the Bible is Chastity? Make sense please

    • Jay Shepherd /

      Paula Hall
      Easy. Because you are wrong.

    • Paula Hall /

Just like I was wrong about the Golden Rule being in the Bible, I suppose?

    • Jay Shepherd /

      Paula Hall
That's right. You will NOT fint the "Golden Rule" in the bible.

The Golden rule came WAY BEFORE THE BIBLE, an altho it tries to say something similar, it is NOT the golden rule.

Your ignorance about the bible is astounding!

    • Jay Shepherd /

      Paula Hall
This is how women are treated in the bibLIE: as SEX SLAVES:

      Sex Slaves (Exodus 21:7-11 NLT)
When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. And if the slave girl's owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter. If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife. If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment. (Exodus 21:7-11 NLT)

    • Paula Hall /

This was actually good treatment in comparison with the rest of the world in ancient times. There are many provisions for her well being commanded; he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, she must be treated as a daughter and not a slave girl, he may not reduce her food, clothing & shelter. She is allowed her freedom if the man fails in his duty to her. What's your beef? And then when Jesus Christ came He gave us the Golden Rule (something we've already covered remember?), which then elevated the status of women to that of equality with men. Without Jesus Golden Rule, there would be no equality of women with men.

    • Jay Shepherd /

      Paula Hall
Or how the bibLIE treats women like THIS:

Laws of Rape (Deuteronomy 22:28-29 NLT)

If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.

What kind of lunatic would make a rape victim marry her attacker? Answer: God.

    • Paula Hall /

How very far we are removed from a chaste society today much to our everlasting disgrace. It was not so with ancient Israel. They were very chaste. Consider Jay, in a chaste society a woman raped will not ever find a husband. She will have no children; in Israel her glory. She would live in poverty and perhaps destitute because a woman alone back then could not easily make her way and she would have no children to support her as she grew older. To make the man marry her was then the greatest of all kindnesses as it would bring her wealth & prosperity, someone to look after her in her old age, and the comfort of a flock of children. You cannot understand ancient history by using the prism of today's reality. Tamar who was raped begged her rapist to marry her saying that not marrying her was worse than the act of rape. Consider: 2 Samuel 13:11-16"Come to bed with me, my sister." 12 "Don't, my brother!" she said to him. "Don't force me. Such a thing should not be done in Israel! Don't do this wicked thing. 13 What about me? Where could I get rid of my disgrace? …. 15 Then Amnon hated her with intense hatred. In fact, he hated her more than he had loved her. Amnon said to her, "Get up and get out!" 16 "No!" she said to him. "Sending me away would be a greater wrong than what you have already done to me."

    • Zizzer Zazzer Zuzz /

Paula, there you go fibbing again. "The Bible is the ultimate source of Love"–come on, now. Who's going to buy that? It's th source of a LOT of hatred and divisiveness if you ask most people.

    • Paula Hall /

It depends on just who you talk to Zizz.

      Just not fast enough.

    • Paula Hall /

sorry to disappoint you. but it is another one of your illusions.

    • Jay Shepherd /

      Paula Hall
It's called a fact. YES, you all are in DECLINE:

Despite a high level of religious adherence, only 9% of Americans in a 2008 poll said religion was the most important thing in their life, compared with 45% who said family was paramount in their life and 17% who said money and career was paramount.

Polls have also shown that doubts about the existence of a god have grown rapidly among younger Americans.

      Buh-BYE!

    • Paula Hall /

i can only imagine its a lie just as everything else that comes out of your mouth.

    • Jay Shepherd /

      Paula Hall
See! Told you that you were living in the dark ages!

      LOL!

    • Paula Hall /

ha ha ha ha ha, don't you wish you could make your illusions come true.

    • Jay Shepherd /

      Paula Hall
I see you don't believe facts.

      I grow tired of you.

      Have a nice life.

    • Paula Hall /

      believe me i will.

  8. Does this town fly flags on utility poles on December 7th. every year? Do they at least fly their flag half staff on December 7th. How about on April 19th. If a 'Yeah' is applied to 3 out of 4 of these questions then I would understand outrage. As horrible 9/11 was… it was a product of war. Many don't like the truth but the truth is 9/11 was the day that showed us how arrogant we were, underestimating small militant groups in other countries that were considered to be 3rd world and on the other had it showed how compassionate and tenacious we are. Everyone says that that day changed us, but in fact we should be changed (changing and growing) every new day. And though I personally like to keep this day as a patriotic remembrance it is clearly not mandatory, at least not yet. This is a case where local majority and budget rules. September 11th is not a national Holiday end of story.

  9. Joel Rivera /

    Vajayjay
"That timing says to me that Amherst believes 9/11 is occasionally worthy of remembrance and respect, but 4/5 of the time it's not," Jones wrote. "Well it either is or it isn't. You don't celebrate or commemorate something worthwhile every five years."

The city commemorates 9-11 every year, you idiot. Read the article.

Vajayjay – "A Massachusetts resident is protesting his town’s decision """not to fly American flags from utility poles on Sept. 11 this year"""", part of a policy to recognize the anniversary of the terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people """with the flags only every five years.""""

      This happens EVERY year:
Musante said flags at municipal sites are flown at half-staff and the fire department holds its annual commemoration at 9:55 a.m. on Sept. 11 at the station to mark the date.

      You lose.

    • Joel Rivera /

      Vajayjay

It is good enough, and yes, you DO lose, because what you want to happen WILL NOT HAPPEN.

      That's called losing.
