I’ve covered lots of bad news over the years. Terrible tragedies — man-made and otherwise.

But what happened in Newtown, Connecticut on this crisp December morning — defies explanation.

A grade school turned into a war zone. Children slaughtered. Five-year-olds executed.

The sounds and images were all too familiar — SWAT teams with weapons drawn, teachers evacuating students, terrified parents clutching cell phones.

The motive is unclear — but at this point it doesn’t really matter.

Mothers and fathers have lost their children. Children have lost their parents.

Innocence lost. A nation mourns.

Our faith tells us that God is our refuge – our strength.

And in the days to come — perhaps we might find some measure of comfort in the One who leads us through the valley of the shadow of death.
