A Texas school district has filed a complaint alleging that students from a rival school engaged in racism by chanting “USA, USA” at a basketball game. The students involved in the incident were reprimanded and forced to apologize.

The San Antonio Independent School District filed the complaint with the University Interscholastic League, the governing body for athletics in Texas. They allege that students at Alamo Heights High School began chanting “USA, USA” after they defeated Edison High School to win a region basketball championship.

Edison’s team is predominantly Hispanic, said Leslie Price, a spokesperson for the San Antonio ISD.

“The implication as they are not American citizens,” Price told Fox News. “We understand competiveness and rivalry, but you need to choose your words and think about the meaning behind them.”

Price said she believes the “USA, USA” chant was racially motivated.

“It was chanted selectively at a school that is predominantly Hispanic and there was understanding of that,” she said.

Price said the school district was bombarded with a number of people who found the “USA, USA” chant to be “very disrespectful.”

“That might be chanted at international soccer games,” she said. “But this is not a chant that these students chant at all of their basketball games. It was selective.”

According to local news accounts, the chanting occurred immediately after Alamo Heights won the championship. It lasted about five seconds before the head coach ordered the students to stop.

Alamo Heights ISD Superintendent Kevin Brown told MySanAntonio.com that he had apologized to San Antonio ISD officials.

“Unfortunately, after the game, we had a handful of students who made a bad decision and we’re very sorry it happened,” Brown told the newspaper. “They made a mistake and we’re going to use this as a learning experience.”

Price said it’s not the first time their students have been victims of insensitive chants. Last year students at another school chanted “USA, USA” and “Arizona.” It happened during the national discussion on Arizona’s controversial immigration bill.

The school district’s athletic director, Gil Garza, told the newspaper that the chant cannot be ignored.

“Our community is fed up,” he told MySanAntonio.com. “It’s really frustrating that kids work so hard to get to this level and there’s another group of kids degrading them.”

Jamey Harrison, deputy director of the University Interscholastic League, told Fox News that they have an “ongoing investigation” into the incident and at this point, it is unclear if the chant was racially motivated.

“Clearly, officials from San Antonio ISD felt it was,” Harrison said. “It’s my understanding they felt like it was motivated by the fact that most of the students on their team were of Hispanic origin.”

Harrison said they do not condone in any way “any type of derogatory chant or racially motivated chant at one of our events.”

Should the investigation uncover wrongdoing, he said the school could face a whole range of sanctions — from probation to potential suspensions.

Television station KSAT said the students who chanted “USA USA” were banned from the state title games and will be forced to apologize.

“We just hope that people know that that’s not who we are and we’re not going to let it happen again,” Brown told KSAT.

What was not mentioned was how the other team interrupted the National Anthem by chanting "Alamo White" at the Alamo Heights team. Once again "our" media only covers one side!

  2. Wait! Is someone saying that the students at Edison High School are not citizens of the "USA?" If they are citizens, then where's the rub?

  3. I'm proud to be American, and screw everyone who thinks I shouldn't be!

    this is such a crock.

  5. PLEASe tell me this story is fake? Really? Really? REALLY? It's not good enough that you can not say the word god these days without the libs having a baby fit but now we can not show national pride either! LIKE HELL! I think we need to start taking a much deeper look at who the terrorist really are that are a threat to the United States. I think they are more home grown then we know and go by the word lib.

  6. You can bet Edison High School probably flies the Mexican flag, and if the American flag is anywhere to be seen, it is probably flown underneath the Mexican flag upside-down, and these people constantly talk about dis-respect, while dis-respecting America, Americans, and anything not Mexican, they are turning this country into a cess-pool that Mexico is.

  7. I'm proud to be American… and screw anyone who thinks I shouldn't express it!

  8. Their allegiance is with their country of origin, Mexico, so the shoe fits.

Then maybe they shouldn't receive any federal money. This is out of hand. If you don't like the USA then get the hell out.

  11. This is a case of insensitivity with a touch of racism. It was meant to hurt. We cheer our nations in international competition with pride. We cheer out schools names with pride. In this particular incident, that school, those students should be sanctioned in hopes that they may realize the hurt they cause.

  13. Leslie Price need to take herself and the entire Edison High School back to Mexico.
And live happily ever after USA, USA.

  15. If an immigrant has assimilated into our American culture, and became an American , this should in no way be offensive. If you are offended GO HOME.

  16. It is amazing how hypersensitive we have become. I am a graduate of Alamo Heights, in the 60's, when the vast majority of students were Anglo, a few hispanics and very few AfroAmericans. My father was an accountant, my mother was the typical Housewife from that time period. occassionally would work but for hte most part she was a stay at home Mom. I can say we were a traditional Middle class famliy living in a great area of town with an exceptional High School. Folks who live/d in Alamo Heights have always been thought of as snobs, the effite, folks that looked down on everyone else whose pedigree was not?

The reason I am commenting is that from what I see and have seen over the past (over 4 decades) is that the culture and attitudes in Alamo Heights has changed. There is more diversity not only within the schools but also within the overall community. I cannot imagine a group of students who came to watch their Team compete in a tournament watch their team win the game then begin a "RACIST" chant. These kids, as the vast amjority of the kids in our country, are much smarter than that. If they had begun to chat Mules Mules Mules (the team mascot) no one would have said a word. Are we becoming so senstive that a patriotic Chat is automatically "Racist". It seems to me this is a group of "Grownups" tryinjg to teach our kids to be……what? What are they trying to teach them? instead of winning a basketball game and one of these teams moving forward to state we are teaching them Be careful because anything you say or do will offend someone! Grownups, Administrators, get a life and let these kids learn about life.

    • BTW I happen to identify as being Hispanic, Latino, Mexican American etc, as my mother was a native of Mexico

Many people seem to be running around with their nose out of joint and underwear obviously too tight just looking for a reason to be offended. I am sick of those that do nothing and aspire to greatness while sitting on the backs of the productive deciding what is acceptable and correct.

    • Terrianne Neill /

Many people seem to be running around with their nose out of joint and underwear obviously too tight just looking for a reason to be offended. Since when is being patriotic ever wrong? Have we completely lost all common sense here? If someone is offended, they are too foolish to be taken seriously and really should be reminded that many have died for this country and if they are offended by our love of country, then get the hell out! Common sense needs to make a comeback and the empty headed need to be ignored and perhaps even held to a degree of accountability for their lack of integrity.

  17. More people should have pride in there country like these kids. If they did maybe this country wouldnt be in the shape its in! If this upset you, you can packup your things and leave. Im sure iran, mexico, south africa, afghanistan, and may others places would love to have you.

    • Brent… i think you are wrong here. This wasn't about pride. The other team was also from the USA. Some of those kids on the other team will likely be US doctors, US teachers, etc… and some will likely serve in the US military. Chanting USA when the U.S. beats Russia in Hockey is patriotic. Chanting USA when some White kids beat some Hispanic kids is indeed racist.

    • Kristine Allen /

It is a victory chant . It is not a racist chant. And turns out that the hispanic kids had a chant of their own. The Edison team had been chanting 'Alamo whites' throughout the game and the white kids did nothing. At the end of the game the white kids chanted what they always do and this game was no different. The players are all U.S. citizens and should all be chanting U.S.A. For the Edison team to be chanting 'Alamo Whites' is completly and highly racist and they deserve whatever comments they as a team receive.

    • Kristine Allen "The white kids chanted what they always do"? Seriously? You mean like last year when they beat another hispanic team and did the same thing and the school had to go into damage control mode that time as well?

  18. I live in Albuquerque which is 50% Hispanic, of which 95% of the Hispanic people speak English the other 5% are illegal immigrants straight over from Mexico, some of the Hispanics here have been here 500 years, way before any English speaking settlements. Yes all immigrants should assimilate that's what America is about, I know that if I went to live in another country I would learn language quickly in order to survive. Sounds like kids need to be talked to about good sportmanship.

  19. It should never be a problem by showing your patriotism. Never. If the other team is legal citizens and immigrants, why would they take offense to USA? That is not hateful at all.

    • Exactly. The United States of America is a melting pot of all races and is itself, not a race. Plus it is a First Amendment right to speak one's mind… That same First Amendment allows them to call those chanting it a racist. It is something local, state and federal government needs to stay out of mandating….

  20. USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, to those of you who say this is racist, I have to words for ya, FUCK YOU and go home.

  21. This is about silencing Americans. Millions of Americans have suffered from illegal immigration. Our American royalty in Washington chose to support illegals. This is done for 1 reason only…To expand the Democrat voting base. They choose to support them over My childrens education , They chose them over My families safty and they continue to choose them when it comes to protecting my job from those who have no legal right to be here! The real hypocracy comes if tomorrow any one of these blood sucking bureaucrats found themselves in a election against a illegal , They would expose them and use the law to protect their own job! I'm sickened by what this country has become and I'm ashamed of it's leadership.

  22. Kristina Alexander /

Okay…someone needs to "vet out" the people elected to power…if they are this stupid, they shouldn't be allowed to lead anyone! USA..is not a race..it is a country where there are many races, and if the district doesn't know the difference then they shouldn't be here!

    • Jared Morgan /

Another sign that the radicals are taking over and trying to pull our society down.

  23. Roger J Johnson /

Its not our fault that the other school is full of hispanic kids! Its SAN ANTONIO! There are more hispanics that white or black in that city, to chant USA USA, isn't racist… I'm it wasnt just white, proud AMERICANS, IT WAS PROUD BLACK, WHITE, AND HISPANIC AMERICANS CHANTING "USA. USA!" The other school probably is heavily populated by illegal.. umm UN DOCUMENTED workers children. ioh yea.. U S A!

    • your are trash, you and your racist school

    • Roger J Johnson /

Edson Donjuan Im trash? LOL you cant eve use grammar correctly, Im not trash nor am I racist, your just weak and pointing fingers to take the attention off the fact your an illegal alien , breaking American laws. You have no rights that a CITIZEN has, that because your NOT a citizen , It has NOTHING to do with the color of skin, that what racism is, ita ALL ABOUT PATROITISM.. I am an AMERCIAN, I served my country and more importantly.. I PAY TAXES… AND NOT LIVE OFF WELFARE AND FOOD STAMPS LIKE THE MAJORITY OF THE ILLEGAL ALIENS. Now, go back re-read the statement and TRY to understasnd what I was saying. Basically, I was saying that it wasnt about race! it was about legality of citizenship..

    • Roger J Johnson /

Oh Ill NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR BEING PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN EITHER USA USA USA USA USA USA USA

    • Roger you are right!

  24. Okay, so what next, will stop saying Welcome to America because it's a racist comment. What should we call ourselves then? This is sick shit. USA Stands for the United States Of America, it is stating a fact, not a racist comment.

  25. There were Edison chanting "Alamo White" when they were a head why is Alamo Heights High School students the only one being forced to apologise?

  26. And illegals marching through American cities demanding their rights and waving the Mexican flag is not racist, what planet do you live on?

  27. Shit, do I now have to learn Spanish? NOT

  28. Shit, do I now have to learn Spanish? NOT

  29. Last time I looked this is the USA, and as Americans we have the right to express allegiance to our country. I bet most of the ones complaining are here illegally anyway. Long live the USA, and screw the haters.

  30. I think the other players should have joined in with the chant…USA! USA! USA! Does that make them racist that they didn't?

  31. OBAMA OSAMA BARRACK AND THE REST OF THE SOCIALIST PARTY NEED TO TAKE HEED AND NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR US AMERICANS OR FOR BEING AN AMERICAN….IF YOU DON'T LIKE THIS COUNTRY OR YOU FEEL THAT YOU WANT TO CHANGE FUNDAMENTALLY ABOUT OUR CONSTITUTION YOU NEED TO PACK YOUR CRAP AND GET THE HELL OUT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA……THIS GOES FOR THE ENTIRE FAR LEFT LOONS THAT ARE HERE IN AMERICA……….PELOSI, REID ETC YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE….THE ENTIRE MSNBC STAFF , BILL MAHER ETC….

  32. Coaches, school, and media use the word 'intent'…the intent of the chant USA……………………..Both illegals and white Americans have been angry at me for not speaking Spanish, I strongly remind them this is USA..oh my I said USA.and we speak ENGLISH in USA… What is my intent…remind them where we are. And it works, I gain respect from them.

  33. Sick and tired of political correctness!

  34. there are some things I like about texas this is one of them

  35. This is so stupid it is unreal. WE are all Americans and USA isn't a race!

  36. I wonder how many of the losing team's players are illegal immigrints? America is going down the shute thanks to the crazy liberals -pretty soon there will be no competition because someone has to lose and their feelings will be hurt-give me a break.

  37. Brandy M Pearsall-Valdez /

I'm not usually a fan of Fox news but I heard this on the radio yesterday and it pissed me off!

  38. Fox new is getting pathetic.

  39. We should start yelling when we play Irish or European Americans USA USA! You guys are so full of crap. Makes me embarrassed to be called a Republican, which I'm sure most of you are.

  40. Why didn't the other school just chant along with them?

  41. TFB! WAHHHHHHHHHH! THEN GO BACK TO HISPANICA!

  42. As I see it, the whole arena should be chanting USA and be proud of it. Why was it offensive? These students did not say anything derogatory.

And I'm pretty sure the 1st Amendment of the Constitution gives even students the right to free speech.

This summer, our US athletes will be competing in the Olympics in London. Will US officials silence the fans when they start chanting "USA"? Will the US fans not be allowed to wear the colors of the flag?

Where is the ACLU on this?

  44. Do you know how many times when I was in school, and as a school (no matter what race a student was) chanted USA? We live by NASA, so when the shuttles launched or landed and we all stood outside to watch them. After school games we won, at pep rallies, during lunch hour in honor of OUR country, flybys from Patrick Air Force Base, when the Thunderbirds would practice for an air show and they would let us out to the fields to watch them, etc. What has this country come to? I just don't get how someone could take offense to that, no matter what nationality you are, when you are in the USA lol.

BOTH teams should have been chanting it together. Even if some students were saying it maliciously, the other students had the chance to unite them as one and participate because THEY ARE ALL AMERICAN! Period.

  45. Really fitts I pay my share of taxes with three and paying over 10000 a yr in child care. As far as taxes I am now on the 25% bracket and insurance not just illegals without insurance hell most of Va don't have it so a house payment over 4000 a yr in housing tax 1500 for homeowners insurance as an E6 in the navy so I guess I don't pay my share I will just blame others u do realize we r n this mess not because of the Mexicans but the elected officals we sent to congress let us all stop fighting each other and cone together as one. I guess that is too much to ask. My kids dying what parent wouldnt be scared of that huh. I am not trying to say who pays more taxes or change ur beliefs but when Americans work together we r unstoppable.

  46. Diana Stewart /

I really don't think my kids would be appoligizing. I'd make sure they didn't go back to school.

  47. Jason Sylvester /

More politically-correct silliness. Utterly absurd – but in the country our so-called "progressives" are remaking into a Third World toilet, scarcely surprising.
