Some parents are calling school officials in Colorado “food Nazis” after they announced a ban on all sweets, including cupcakes, candy bars and even birthday cakes – unless the cakes are made with district-approved recipes.
School officials in Greeley, CO advised parents that new federal guidelines require all food served on grade school campuses to adhere to strict calorie counts.

Teachers will no longer be able to reward students with a piece of candy for good work. Instead of a Jolly Rancher, students who excel might be given a pencil – or an eraser.
“Fundraisers held at school are no longer allowed to include food items of any kind,” said Jenna Raymond, of the District 6 Nutrition Dept. “Rewards for children are to include gifts such as erasers and pencils.”
The Greeley County School district is even banning sweets at off-campus fundraisers.
“The only food items allowed to be sold for these types of fundraisers are those that meet the nutritional guidelines,” she told the Greeley Gazette.
That means no more sweet treats like cake at birthday parties or class holiday parties – unless the cake is made with a recipe approved by the school district.
“We have a recipe we use in the district that uses black beans and the kids love it,” Raymond told the newspaper.
Anita Colwell’s nine year old daughter is a fourth grader at Scott Elementary School. She said her daughter refuses to eat the cafeteria food.
“I know they are trying to make their meals more nutritious, but when they implemented the new guideline, my children stopped eating cafeteria food,” Colwell told Fox News. “They won’t touch it. The food is horrible.”
Colwell attended a PTO meeting where parents were informed of the pending changes. She said parents are furious.
“They’re dictating what I can send with my child for lunch – what I can give them for a treat at a school party,” she said. “I don’t believe that’s right. It’s my child. I should be able to feed them whatever I want. They’re not raising my child. They’re not paying for their orthodontic bills. They’re not tucking them in at night telling them they love them. But yet they’re telling me what I can and can’t feed my child?”
She said school officials are acting like “food Nazis.”
“This is how it starts,” she said. “The government is sticking their nose where they don’t exactly belong.”
Colwell said the kids have to have some fun.
“I don’t think it hurts a child to have a cupcake at a Christmas party or getting a piece of hard candy from a teacher if they get 100 percent on a test,” she said. “They should be allowed to have rewards that entice them to do better in school – and a pencil is not going to cut it.”
She wondered what other moms were going to be able to send to school for class parties.
“What are we supposed to do – send them nuts and boiled eggs for treats?” she said, noting that eggs and nuts are within the nutritional guidelines set by the school.
The school district also defended a ban on diet soft drinks.
“The American Association of Pediatrics has said that around four ounces of fruit juice is perfectly health for your children, and that is healthier than diet soda,” Raymond lectured parents.
That led Colwell to wonder how teachers will enforce the regulation.
“What are they going to start doing – checking every water bottle they bring in to make sure it’s not pop?”

As usual, out come the Nutrition and "Everyone has to be thin" corner preachers to talk about the sweets — and missing the entire purpose of the article. Seriously people?
You can thank Queen Moochelle, her royal fatass highness.
No you can't, these guidelines were established years ago, this district has just decided how they will interpret them.
Vickie Whitecotton yes there's absolutely no coincedence that NOW all of a sudden kids all over the country are having this crap forced upon them. Sheep.
Al Zdenek actually CA did this YEARS ago, before Obama took office. That states are just now enforcing, may have something to do with a deadline to begin or lose Federal money. So no, I'm not a sheep, I am actually informed, involved in my daughters school, and well read. You might try getting your information from more than one source.
Al, the major changes began in 2004, with additional requirements that had to be met, like benchmarks in subsequent years, with the understanding that overhauling a food program required effort, money and training. You can go visit the USDA and get all the school lunch program information you would like.
Oh come on. If any institution needs regulation, it's school food. People want to gripe and complain about the obesity epidemic and then are shocked when schools start implementing guidelines. If you want to make your kids fat on your own time, that's fine, but schools don't get that leeway. It still sickens me that there are ZERO vegetarian options available at schools. At least a meatless Monday would be a small step towards the future.
and now we have Pizza as a vegetable
Mr. Hermes: You CAN absolutely blame Obama and all Democrats for the FEDERAL regulations that are being enforced in Colorado. It's happening in South Carolina and elsewhere.
Must be part of Michelle's plan to improve our lives. My plan is to get her the hell out of the WH next election
Sounds like a great way to improve our lives!
Really our government has many more important issues to deal with than what we parents are doing to raise our children. I thought we lived in a free country. I live here because I want the opportunity to raise my children the way I want to and not have the government sticking their nose in where it doesn't belong. It is always those minority of people that want to but in where they are not wanted and change things that do not need changing.
Because GOD FORBID we try to not have an entire generation and subsequently entire nation, that is fat lazy and completly unhealthy!
oh nevermind, I should have looked at where this story came from first….
Establishment…. Establishment….You always know what's best!
This is what happens when you vote liberal.
Makes you wonder what they told the kids would happen if they did complain about the food served in the cafeteria.
Black bean cake, YUM!
Nothing like neo stalinists running the schools.
Nothing like neo stalinists running the schools.
it's good in some points, check how many people and kids in this country have diabetes… but on the other hand, kids still kids, they should have some treats even not often… life is to live and enjoy, can't be only live or enjoy…
I would ban all processed food….except fermented food. Ban GMO Ban pasteurized milk. Ban mercury fillings, vaccine adjuvants.
mercury poison comes from china
It's real simple, THEY ARE MY KIDS, NOT YOURS, LET ME DECIDE WHAT THEY WILL EAT AND NOT EAT!
Just think… these are the same people that are going to pass out Obama care. They will select what you need to be healthy or if you are too old for medical care. First the food… then you life.
This just opens up the black market on snickers bars. I can just see the shady guy saying – "hey – kid wanta buy a soda pop" Then next it will be the "war on candy" with federal dollars being diverted to the crack down on black market cupcakes. Then no 7-11's or candy stores within 500 feet of a school.
Wait until the Liberls get the U.N Convention on the Rights of a Child passed. Parent WILL loose all their rights and those rights will go to, not the Federal Government but to a U.N court. If you don't know about this read up and see what has happened in counties that have signed this one; then let your reps know they better fight this.
You watch, if SCOTUS lets Obamacare stand this will be just the tip of the iceberg of mandates from the fed telling you what you can eat, wear, drive etc.
Just wait….next OBAMA will be coming in your home and telling you what foods you are ALLOWED to feed your children etc…Think I am kidding…the Federal Govt just started a program in Seattle where they go into homes and "HELP" parents to know what's best for their children…..
sounds like that school's nutritional guidelines have forgotten that egg and peanut allergies can be deadly. If we take all the so called "bad for you" foods off the table we'll be staring at an empty plate. Let the kids eat what the parents deem safe for their child. Party treats should be sensitive to the child with allergies to certain foods not eliminated entirely.
I wpnder how many calories are in Elmers glue, because the kid who sat next to me in the second grade ate that stuff like candy.
Best way to tell these food fascists where to go to, the parents need to pack their kids lunches and stop buying the PC slop from the cafeteria. And make sure that the lunches students bring are the choice of the parents and not the dietary Gestapo.
While it is true schools should not dictate what children eat if their parents pack their lunch, they should be held responsible for what they supply children to eat on the campus. Therefore, if a floor supervisor (what I call them because they act like prison guards) sees a child eating a cupcake packed by Mom and/or Dad, they have no right to take it away because it is NOT THEIR PROPERTY! Possession is 9/10ths of the law in this case and the children are eating the product of their parents labor, not the school's funding. MEANWHILE….I have seen kids lunches that consist of nothing but sugar products. In these cases, the child should be suspended until the parent corrects the deficiency…because simply it is the parents fault.
Talk about pure control. That's way too far. This gov't is becoming China and North Korea. Gov't thinks they know best when they know NOTHING. Look at obama, he's teaching his girls that abortions are ok. You weren't considered a human until you were born. Have as many as you want, you aren't killing any live thing that is growing inside you. If parent does pack something, the police come in and confescate it to eat it. I bet the officials eat all the confescated food. America, watch out. Socialism is here to stay…
I agree with the school guidelines regarding food. The child obesity rate in America is absolutely horrible. Our kids already eat enough candy. They don't need anymore for lunch.
Besides, in the long run, obese kids equal massive healthcare costs in the future. The federal government is actually saving us money.
Kids aren't obese because of sugar or fat. Kids in the 40's, 50's and beyond ate plenty of carbs and fats and weren't obese. The problem is that kids aren't out playing and getting the exercise they should be getting and they're sitting around watching tv, surfing, texting, etc.. and eating way more than they should. Want to make a fat kids skinny, don't take away cupcakes and candy, they'll just figure out ways to get it on their own, get them out doing something, ANYTHING with other kids and don't take no for an answer. Who knows you might even promote some social skills while your at it, trust me, we need more people with social skills.
MY QUESTION IS, ARE THE TAXPAYERS OF GREELEY GOING TO SIT BACK AND ACCEPT THIS? THESE PEOPLE IN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM HAVE TO BE STOPPED. IF THE PARENTS DON'T RESPOND TO THIS, THEY WILL CONTINUE TO EXPAND THEIR CONTROL OVER EVERY ASPECT OF FAMIL;Y LIFE.
You all know what to do. Just do it in November.
Amazing how people react when a little sugar is removed from schools. WAKE UP PEOPLE it's not just the sugar, it's the no tolerance that all schools are preaching. It coming from the federal goverments, the school boards, and teacher unions. They want us to have our kids so medicated that they sit still in class and sugar may give them a little more energy…so let's take that away. Then let's not forget about the reading one hour a night and other homework kids have in grade school…..Oh and the medication that they took in morning… it still working at night to help them with their homework….Is it any wonder that our children are overweight. And yes I do know what I am talking about…. I have 3 boys and the last 3 years have been a nightmare dealing with this issue in highschool. Unless the young parents get on the stick, I'm not sure what will happpen to our kids. After what I have seen in our school district I would vote to home school or send my child to a charter school. NEVER would I place my child in a public school again…. That just my comment.
“This is how it starts,” she said. “The government is sticking their nose where they don’t exactly belong.”.
If this were truly a government mandate, all schools across the country would be doing the same thing…and they aren't. This is something being pushed by this school district. They need to oust their elected school board officials and install a new set.
Oh my G… SERIOUSLY? The parents need to start recalling those dopes from the school boards responsible for this nonsense and remind them who exactly they are working for! As a parent there is no way this would wash clear in MY district. I would do something about it, and FAST.
…. And folks, please have some common sense here. The US PRESIDENT has nothing to do with this isolated dopey-ism, and neither do liberal/conservative labels. Geeze why do some people have to politisize EVERYTHING? Yeah we know you hate the prez with a frothing frenzy but the poor guy isn't behind EVERYTHING ya know! TUH!
Sorry cuz he is he is not who u think he is
Romuan Moye BUT HE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS SCHOOL'S POLICY!!!
All I can say here is… I wish that this was my children's school district. I send what I want my children to eat and there is no one on this planet that is going to change that. I raise my children by own standardsmrals, and beliefs. I'll be damned if some jackwagon in government or a school tries to change that. I'd like to parents pull their kids out of public schools all together. All public school is, is a place for government to try to indoctrine our kids into little robots. I teach my children to think for themselves and have their own opinions. Public schools don't like that and see that as an unruley child…
the first time they take my childs food away thy better be ready to get bitch slapped not to mention a BIG law suit!
Cannot feed the kids sweets but do not have a problem with pink slime meat and chicken full of hormones and steriods. The name of this story may be offensive to Nazis too, they are SocialistFascist/ Americans.
Our republic would not be on the fiscal and monetary path of suicide if the nation's school system were exemplary.
Years ago when in High School, lunch looked horrible but the funny part was, it tasted good and there was at least 4 choices of the main item. If you wanted you could get seconds if any was left and it only cost twenty five cents a day.
This school district would be in huge trouble with me and my lawyer if they tried to interfere with what my son brings to school in his bagged lunch. Many things on their so called nutrional guidelines are deadly to my son. He has food allergies. But they do not accommodate that in the school lunch program. So we just don't buy it. Our school district stopped allowing the cupcakes and cookies for birthdays and parties because of food allergies being on the rise. (No, I did not lobby for that. I just made sure his birthday treats were allergen friendly per a list the school district used to send out).
Ridiculous! Part of the fun of school is having the occasional goodie. Bunch of spoilsports over there in Colorado.
our grade school did this like 4 or 5 yrs ago. I am from a red state of kansas. we did this during the bush years so this has little to do with Obama. it was health issues and who make money off our kids. we took out pop machine in the high school. We have had to get creative on fundraising.next look at your univerities how they make money off our kids diet's…This was about what are we feeding our kids at school. What are the school lunches made of…
I work in the kitchen for a k-9 school, we serve cookies at snack three days a week, and the other two days they get dessert with lunch. we have a salad and deli bar for the kids if they don't like the meal served "family" style. there is also a snack bar that sells candy. (no soda)
The classrooms are in seperate buildings and the kids walk outside to get to each class. At recess they sled ride and ice skate on the ponds in winter, swing sets, tag and even DODGEBALL. All students in grades 5-9 have to play a sport, whether it be varsirty, jv or a "learning" team. The lower grades have gym. Now out of these 400 students there are maybe 3-5 that are over weight!
that's funny you better count again!
Bethann Adams why? your more than welcome to come and count for yourself.
This our last year for cakes, brownies our principal and higher stopped parties cupcakes etc in our school cuz allergies , child obesity, last year
Cathy Gervais so glad I work at a private school, where the gov't has no business or rights
These school admins are clearly overreacting to federal guidelines which do not infringe on what students can bring into school, only what the cafeteria serves and the snack machines dispense. Our schools got rid of soda and replaced with water and juice years ago and kids can still bring soda in from home. The food Nazis here are over-reaching their boundaries using federal nutrition guidelines as an excuse to enforce their own agenda.
Yeah? Then why do those admins eat out of sight of the kids? I'm sure they're following the guidelines . . . .
Please note, the government is not telling parents what they can send for their child to eat, they are saying that all food SERVED at school must meet federal guidelines. You should really take the time to read the article and not just jump to conclusions.
Here's the deal.watch out for the government control. If you did not know about the law they tried to get and are working on about they are trying to pass a law that the family's farms can't let their kids under 18 work on their own farm.COME ON AMERICA WAKE UP PLEASE.
go along with this deal they are trying to do.the farmers can not let their kids work on the farm if they are under 18 that is what they are going for.WAKE UP AMERICA OR YOU WILL BE SLAVES> thank you child labor laws they are trying to pass.
I agree that it doesn't hurt a child to get rewarded with a piece of candy. Maybe teachers should start letting the kids chose their rewards you would be amazed how many kids would choose stickers, pencils, crayons, markers over candy. Also, there may be nut and egg allergies so the school district needs to think this over.
It's funny how everyone's screaming about this, but then again these are probably the same parents with kids who are overweight and obese and can do no wrong because mommy and daddy let them have whatever they want.
It seems every things a war to them
thank you sarah!
I am upset by this for multiple reasons.
I think its great! Seeing how childhood obesity, diabetes, heart disease is higher than its ever been, and parents don't seem to be able to control what their child eats at home, at least now the parents can't blame the school for contributing to the childs illnesses. Now whatever sickness the kid gets is all on the parents back. People, wake up and see what you are feeding yourself, your kids, its making you sick and killing you!
No cake at a birthday or Christmas party? What about Halloween? Oh, they'll probably just ban that altogether. Hmmm, instead of Valentine chocolates, they'll get Valentine rice cakes. This school district has gone too far. Welcome to Nanny USA.
I would tell this school district to PISS OFF! Just more of BIG BROTHER in you're life where it need NOT be!
