Rhode Island will once again have a Christmas tree.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee has decided to abandon his habit of calling the Statehouse Christmas tree a holiday tree. The governor said his previous actions had generated too much anger.
“He caved,” State Rep. Doreen Costa told Fox News. “This is fabulous news – a small victory for us who fight the war on Christmas.”
However, the decision generated widespread outrage – leading to some citizens calling Chafee “Governor Scrooge.”
Three years ago, Costa introduced legislation requiring the governor call the tree a Christmas tree. She held an alternative tree lighting ceremony outside her office after Chafee refused to comply.
She credits citizens with forcing the governor to cave.
“It was the pressure of people asking him to call it like it is,” she said.
Rhode Island’s Secretary of State will preside over a Christmas tree lighting ceremony on Thursday.
