A Florida community college has launched an investigation and placed a tenured professor on leave over reports that she made students in a math class sign a pledge to vote for President Obama.
A spokesman for Brevard Community College told Fox News that Sharon Sweet was placed on an unpaid leave of absence effective immediately after they received a call from a concerned parent.

“The allegations center on her soliciting support in her classes for President Obama in the upcoming election,” said college spokesman John Glisch in a statement to Fox News.
The website Watchdogwire.com, which first reported the allegations, said the students were told to sign a pledge that read: “I pledge to vote for President Obama and Democrats up and down the ticket.”
They were also given bookmarks from gottavote.org - a website paid for by the Obama-Biden campaign — targeting young voters, the website reported.
Glisch said they learned of the incident last Thursday and launched an immediate investigation. He said they plan on interviewing as many as 100 students to determine who may have signed the pledge.
“The college has specific policies that address the political activities of faculty and staff, which state that no college employee shall solicit support for a political candidate during regular college work hours or on college property,” Glisch said.
He said Sweet asked for — and was granted an immediate leave of absence without pay — effective immediately.
Sweet is a tenured professor who has been at the college for five years, he said. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, she could be exonerated, suspended or terminated.
Glisch said steps are also being taken to make sure all faculty and staff are aware of policies on political activity.

This is an outrage at best… and this teacher, had she been promoting the Republican ticket, would have been fired immediately. Why can't the same hold true to for the liberal machine? I have a son in public school and its always been my opinion – you educate him, let me raise him, get out of my house and stay in the school!

A math professor has NO BUSINESS AT ALL in even discussing politics. They are MATH professor, If she did in fact have the students sign a pledge to vote of ANY party she should be fired and have her benefits reduced if not removed completely. The college should also be sanctioned for allowing this to occur. They need to make sure their professors are doing their jobs correctly and properly.

Thanks Bill! You know when I went to college we were concerned about things but Math and Physics were not places for political punditing. Those classes were hard enough without having to deal with the professors personal feelings about politics and society. Heck I was worried if the equations I was working on were right or not. We usually talked about those kind of things in the cafeteria or at parties. We didn't even hear about things like that back in Chichester!

Two things. This teacher should be fired – not put on leave. And, why did the parent have to raise the alarm, why didn't the adult students know how wrong this is?
John Bonus,I have a good friend who`s son was in college. He took a class for a purpose. Unfortunately,it was taught by a lesbian professor. Who had felt it more her duty to teach lesbian and gay history over what she was there to teach.When he mentioned it ,he recieved nothing but backlash. So he was still stuck in a class,teaching everything but what my friends had paid more than $13.000 dollars for their son to learn.The result,he finished out the year ,then went elsewhere. A sorry excuse of a college,in my opinion!

I'm a democrat and I find this gross. Nobody's vote should ever be coerced or forced or even suppressed because they can't get an ID. And colleges do not turn people into liberals. If that were the case, a lot more people would be liberals. Colleges help reinforce critical thinking skills which is a skill that more people need.

Joel Butler,I would really like to know where all these people have been hiding? How does one Live in the USA without at least one form of Id ? We need some form or another for just about everything! No Birth Certificate,no SS#.no library card, no drivers license.Never been to school or a hospital or a real job. This is crazy. And no.It is not asking to much.Nor are we a third world country where we should settle for less!In case you hadn`t noticed,this once melting pot of a great nation.Has begun to fragment itself into great chunks! These people are not hiding anywhere. They are everywhere. There are people who have never had a car. There are people who never need to fly. Did you know that in Pennsylvania there is not a place that can issue ID cards within 100 miles of some towns? Do you not consider that an undue burden? And if you need to show a photo ID then they should be free as well. We have a law in this country that prevents a poll tax. And if you need to buy something in order to vote, that is a poll tax. And I would gladly support photo IDs to vote if someone could at least prove to me that there is mass in person voter fraud going on. If you look at the facts, in the past 10 years, there has been 10 cases of in person voter fraud. This is not a problem at all. Also, in some places you can't get a copy of your birth certificate without a photo ID and you can't get a photo ID without a birth certificate? What are these people to do? Please, tell me.
The most important thing any teacher can do is develop students to think critically and independently. This teacher obviously gets an F. This is not surprising in universities which are bastions of thought control, like Bill Ayers – a convicted criminal. In college I learned to parrot their crap but they convinced me of their errors by example.

The thing that strikes me about this story is it lack of detail. It makes a big accusation, but gives little information on who made the accusation, what the professor actually did. Poor reporting.
