An Oregon grade school principal suggested in a newspaper interview that peanut butter and jelly sandwiches might be racially and culturally offensive.
“What about Somali or Hispanic students who might not eat sandwiches?” Verenice Gutierrez told the Portland Tribune.

Gutierrez, principal of Harvey Scott K-8 School, was being interviewed about the school district’s equity training program designed to narrow the achievement gap. The newspaper said she “picks up on the subtle language of racism every day” and used the peanut butter sandwich to illustrate her point.
“Another way would be to say: ‘Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you have anything like that?’ let them tell you,” she told the newspaper. “Maybe they eat torta. Or pita.”
The equity program is called “Courageous Conversation” and it involves taking educators through an intensive program so they can understand their own “white privilege,” the newspaper reported.
Robb Cowie, the communications director for Portland Public Schools told Fox News they were aware of the story and to their knowledge it was factually accurate.
“What we’re trying to do in our school district is to ensure that we have instruction that is meaningful and relevant to ever student in the classroom,” Cowie said.
In some cases, that means offering programs strictly for students of color.
The newspaper provided information about a drum corps that was set up for black and Latino boys. One parent complained that the class discriminated against women, Asians, whites and Native Americans.
Guitierrez defended the class and denied it was discriminatory.
“When white people do it, it is not a problem,” she told the Tribune. “But if it’s for kids of color, then it’s a problem? Break it down for me. That’s your white privilege, and your whiteness.”
Cowie said the district did not have a problem with the principal’s statements.
So does the school system provide clubs strictly for white students?
“I’m not aware of that in Portland,” he said.

“Big picture – what we are trying to encourage in our district – are educational experiences that are relevant that give kids support, encouragement, engagement,” Cowie said. “We are certainly not trying to create situations where students are excluded.”
He said the district was addressing the issue of so-called ‘white privilege’ to even the playing field so that all children have an opportunity succeed.
“It’s an understanding that families and students come into the educational setting with different backgrounds and different strengths and in some cases different advantages,” he said. “That translates into different educational outcomes.”
Cowie said the district wants to narrow the achievement gap for “students of color.”
“Persistently we have not done a good enough job educating students of color and specifically African-American students,” he told Fox News. “That’s what the program is addressing. How can we find a way to support African American students, their families – so that we are producing better outcomes and narrowing the achievement gap.”
The story generated a number of comments from local residents outraged over the equity training program. One reader suggested that under the school’s policies, the phrase “American as apple pie” could be considered offensive.
“I am sick of progressives’ attacks on our culture. I am offended when people coming to our country find it necessary to denigrate our culture and teachers who are teaching our children somehow feel like they have to apologize for being American,” the reader wrote.
Another wrote: “Teaching against peanut butter sandwiches and white privilege is critical thinking? No – that is racism and radical activism.”
And that brings us back to the peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
“It’s not really about a sandwich,” he said. “It’s about how do we reach kids and speak to them through experiences that are meaningful to them – that are understandable to them so that they have an entry point into the curriculum and can engage in learning.”
He said they don’t want to make any student feel unwelcomed – intentionally or unintentionally that might disconnect a child or a family from the educational system – even if it’s a PB&J.
“Certainly a sandwich isn’t going to do it in itself,” he said. “But it is one of those things that we want to be aware of in all aspects of our instructional practice.”

This is the most ludicrous thing I have read all week. I think the left is actually trying to promote racism and keep it alive because it supports their power base. I also think they oppose school vouchers so our kids will have to attend these indoctrination centers. Please just teach our kids to read, write, do math, and find the United States and China on a map. Let them play together on the playground and learn to like each other that way without throwing up these walls between them. I work in a very ethnically and culturally diverse workplace and I believe for well over 95% of Americans, in their day to day business and personal dealings, race is not an issue at all. I believe if Kids were left to play together without parental interference their number would be closer to 100%. Poorly stated but you get my drift.
ok this article kinda pissed me off….
and you stated it well enough unc
As part of the privileged majority whose culture is dominate I humbly suggest you do not recognize how minorities feel. While I think that using a peanut butter and jelly sandwich as an example is reaching, having lived in a a place where whites were the minority for more than a few years, it is true that the majority is unaware of their unconscious racial bias. It would almost be impossible for the majority to be aware because for them it is normal. That being said this is America and as a melting pot of many cultures peanut butter and jelly sandwiches might be a good place to start melting into the pot. It is not like we are in Norway and they are being expected to eat raw herring…. Or in (you pick the culture and strange food). see not so hard to figure out after all. Oh, and by the way minorities are very careful who they share their persecution feelings with. They have learned they are treated as outsiders. Did you ever watch the movie "white mans burden?" written and directed by an Asian American it deals with this in a ver effective way and it is good entertainment to boot.
You are beginning to bore me Leslie.
Suffice it to say, all good radical left wing intentions aside, whatever they pretend them to be. Based on what I know about human nature. This does more harm than good. It serves more to divide than unite.
This is so sad. My oldest who is now 14 was best friends with a girl when she was about 8. Alyssa came home one day very upset she did not understand why other kids would not be her friend. We had to tell her how Beacuse she had a different color of skin some kids did not like her. She did/ does not see they where a different color all she saw was a person. Now that she is older she can see that on all paper work ask's what is your raes. This is a sad thing. There is to much of this. We are all the same " PEOPLE ". I do not think changes and/ or different groups are needed. If people would stop pointing out the difference in the color of our skin in 10/20 years our kids would not see it anymore. And on a side note. If religion was not a hiden center point in all this I think the world would be a safer place. Look what has/ is happening Beacuse of it. Stop trying to change things. They are treated as outsiders Beacuse some of them are not willing to just be people they feel the should get more or different. That being the problem.
Thanks Vanissa. My point exactly. I have watched younger kids play. As a rule they do not care about color until it is pointed out to them by adults. This is a thinly veiled ploy by the left to get to our kids early and throw a wall between the so they can make sure racism lasts for at least one more generation. Was the Civil Rights act of 1964 necessary ? YES!!! In fact it was supported by a higher percentage of Republicans than Democrats. Check the roll call. We now have laws on the books banning discrimination in education and the work place, as we should have. When violations occur in these areas or law enforcement the offenders should be prosecuted. Race relations, on the whole, in this country are way better than years past. I find that in most cases people will stay among their own race or culture in social situations by their own choice. They will invite outsiders in if they feel these people will assimilate themselves to the environment. Alana and I were recently invited to the Quinceañera of the daughter of a co-worker. We were the only white people there. We were the only white people there and were fully accepted by everyone there weather we knew them or not. We got into the spirit of the party and had a great time. There will always be small minded people who will judge people on racial or religious grounds, but they are a small minority which is getting smaller all the time. You cannot legislate thought. In the mean time let our kids grow up and let them form their own views on life and think for themselves. The vast majority will make the eight choices.
I was just out walking my dog. I saw a woman that did not pick up after hers and did not plan on it as she did notj have anything with her to do so. I stoped and watched her with both my 5 and 3 year old. She asked what did I need. I asked her how she was going to clean up after her dog. She then asked me if I was herassing her Beacuse she was black? Need I say and more?
To be totally honest Vanissa. I never carried a "cleanup bag" in the park either. Hey, it's fertilizer. But I get your point loud and clear.
As for Leslie, she never comment back after we have blown her out of the water. Hit and run only.
Like calling crap holy…its completely ludicrous.
There's more Racism in a TACO…
This, idiotic principle is,reintroducing segregation. congratulations ffor setting society in Partisans Portland back 60 years.
This is America. We eat American things we do American things. If people don't like it, oh well. We don't go over to their countries and ask them to change for us? I am so sick and tired of it being about what people who immigrated here want and to hell with what born and bred Americans want. Don't get me wrong, I am all for people coming to America to better themselves and to give their families a chance at a life they couldn't have before, but why should WE change for them? They came here, it's time to adjust to our lifestyles. You can call me ignorant or racist (I'm Puerto Rican BTW), I could care less, but I can proudly say I was born and raised here. If you don't want to eat a PB&J then don't eat it. Sheesh!
Omg this is ridiculous! Are you kidding me? What I don't understand is this. How come when my great grandmother immigrated here from the Ukraine, she was expected to learn and use the language. There were no programs to help her. She learned English by listening to the radio and was expected to get a job immediately. Which she did. We are a country full of immigrants. Unless you are native American you are an immigrant. These kids wouldn't feel left out if their parents would step up and act like Americans. We speak English in this country and yes we eat pb&j sandwiches. We're not going to your country and expecting you to change for us don't expect us to change for you. We need to stop making it so easy for everyone and go back to how it used to be. And btw I'm not ignorant or racist either. My family immigrated here and I have friends and family of all different nationalities. And we all feel the same way.
It is the problem with society as a whole! Everyone is constantly looking for something to b offended about!
So true!!
This is absolutely ridiculous. I'm getting so sick of this. We are not in Somalia and even if half the kids are Hispanic, this is still America. It's a damn sandwich. AMERICANS eat sandwiches.
C'mon man!!!!!!
how you feeling?
much better. still in pain though . thanxxx
Seriously?
So I suppose our pre track meet high school lunch of PB&J and chicken noodle soup was a little too white? Maybe if we got it on a pita and had chicken rice soup it may have been more politically correct
Ok- my son goes to Scott School. I love our school and our Principal! She is smart, kind and she knows her students.
Scott students are very diverse group. My son has a new classmate who is having trouble with his English. How else any teacher can relate to this student if not by learning something about his culture? It is not about the "white privilege" it is more about being able to have some common ground with a student who is already feeling uncertain in the school. Keep in mind-this student is learning his SECOND language! We should all be so lucky!
In this article someone is trying REALLY hard to get attention by playing the racism card. Oh, and let's add something as truly American as pthe PB&J and point out that Principal is seeing that as offensive-that will get us all the publicity that we need! Yay..
Interesting article Vesma. Most of the comments reacting to the article are way off the point, how to narrow the achievement gap in students. Most educators I know do try to provide meaningful instruction that is relevant to ALL their students. That's just second nature. You have a Russian immigrant, you find ways to make them feel valued for their unique background. The same goes for all students in your classroom. We must not ignore the cultures represented in our class but value them in every way. Even sandwiches.

Yes, Vicki!! That is what the teachers are doing in our school every day. We love our school!!
When you come to America, learn to eat American! HAHAHAHAHA! and, the schools need to provide better lunches for kids of all colors! not that fast food garbage and pizza/soda stuff either!
PB and J? Isn't that the crummy sandwich they give you if you don't have any lunch money? if they are going to give away free sandwiches, at least it's not a ham sandwich!!!!
bc you know what they say about free ham sandwiches and Jewish dilemma!! lol
I'm sorry, this article is just toooo funny to me!!! hahahahaha! FREE SANDWICHES or just have a taco? is that how it goes? in that case, I'll have a taco, please…hahaha upgrade…
btw, to the principal: last time I checked, nobody was paying my rent for me. how can that be, since I'm obviously white? I heard I'm supposed to get a break bc of that. would someone please tell my creditors that I'm so special??
Why don't we just become completely color blind and stop using adding the word color when speaking about human beings.
Yes, read about it yesterday, and am still chuckling. Just more signs of our times.
The fact that she assumes only whites like pb&j and tha hispanics need pita bread is racist. So Mexicans will only eat Mexican food? You're too far north sweetheart, come to TX and we'll let the hispanics here educate you on the many different foods they eat. Moron!
So, does that mean its racially offensive for McDonalds to hire someone of latino persuasion? Can Taco Bell hire a white person? Can I still eat tacos? I love tacos. I like fried chicken too. Am I offending my fellow white man for my love of chicken and tacos. Kung Pao Chicken is good too. But I don't want to make the Asians mad because a white guy is eating their food. I guess I will have to revolve my diet around PB&J and Greasy Cheeseburgers. These people are stupid. I am going to keep eating my tacos, fried chicken, Asian dishes as well as anything that I enjoy the taste of. By the way it's racially offensive to me that you choose not to eat a PB&J sandwich because that's white. Did you know peanut butter was made by an African American. So is it supposed to be a white mans food or a black mans food? Welcome to America home of the dumbest intellectual mines in the world.

I believe it is particularly appropriate that an Hispanic principal who daily opines on racism finds peanuts to be indicative of evil White Anglo racism, because in her world view, peanuts are distinct from 'Hispanic' culture. Peanuts are indigenous to areas South of the US Border. Hispanics on the other hand derive their culture from Spani, a European nation, which by the way consists of evil Whiteys.
All I can say is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3ZAGBL6UBA.
All I can say is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3ZAGBL6UBA.
I thought the era of segregation was over? This nutty broad is insanely stupid with her pbj comment, but yeah, gotta be Oregon.
I am a teacher and test scores have proven that African American students have been scoring at a lower level, so have children that, live in poverty. This school/district is absolutely rediculous! Instead of making clubs just for African American students, why not give these students intervention and small group instruction at school to help close the achievement gap? I want to know how that principal became an administrator.
Now I've heard everything.
What they are doing comes down to one thing when they have classes for one race only and that is called segragation. It wasn't right in the 60's and earlier and it is not ok to do it now.
Such stupidity
When will adults realize that kids aren't racist. We teach them racism. No child is upset that one kids mom sent them to school with PbJ and the other brought a pita. Adults: get over yourselves and let kids be kids!
"A-" fricken "Men"
The heck? So I can't walk around school eating a peanut butter jelly sandwhich whilst yelling, 'Peanut butter jelly time?'….made me think twice about being a full-time educator.
??? who doesn't like Peanut Butter and Jelly sammies?? as long as you're not allergic to peanuts????
why is it racist???
I know huh?? Its soooo good, especially if you heat up the PB 'n J just right oh man….its like heaven! LOL cuase apparently other kids from other backgrounds don't know what the hell a PB & J sandwhich is so its considered…offensive!! Dun dun duuuuuuuuun!
You shouldn't do that because it's not nice to yell with your mouth full.
Good grief….no wonder kids are so confused….PBJ really…
Aint that the truth!
Just another reason why schools are failing.
Hey Doof- did you know that peanuts have a South American origin (Peru)? Did you know that George Washington Carver, an African- American, was responsible for promoting the peanut? So a PB&J is the food of the white elite? Do a little research before making a fool of yourself.
But Carver although credited with it he did not create peanut butter, did create over one hundred uses for the peanut.
People like this man poromote and incourage racism by making something out of nothing. We are all "people" and should be able to eat what we want and the same goes for children in school. This actually seems discriminatory against people who like PB&J. Glad my kids don't go there.
YOU GOT 2 BE KIDDING
I know right? It is sad that racism against everyone but children of color is being promoted in this scool. Just glad my kids didn't go to a school like that. All kids (all people for that matter) should be considered equals. No differences due to the color of their skin, religion, disabilities and the list goes on. We are all people living together in this country and we need to try to get along and be nice to one another! What is sad is racism is being promoted in this school by the very people running it! Ok off my soap box now.
It's no wonder that Oregon ranks 49th in education with loon's like Gutierrez.
Here’s a summary of how Oregon is performing in education from the Education Week Magazine annual survey of education in America:
1. Oregon is the worst state in the nation for Kindergarten enrollment (rank 50).
2. Oregon is the worst state in the nation for adults in the labor force working full time and year-round, a measurement of the outcome of the education system (rank 50).
3. Oregon is the worst state in the nation for 4th grade math achievement gains (rank 50).
4. Oregon is the second worst state in the nation for 4th grade reading achievement (rank 49).
5. Forty-seven states have early-learning standards — Oregon has none.
6. Oregon does not define college readiness or college preparation.
7. Oregon has no path for industry certification while 40 other states do.
8. Oregon has no requirement for licensing teachers that includes substantial coursework completion in the subject area to be taught. Twenty-seven other states do.
9. Oregon has no test of subject-specific knowledge in order to obtain a teaching license. Forty-two other states do.
10. Oregon does not require formal annual evaluations of all teachers’ performance. Forty-three other states do.
11. Oregon does not publish rankings or results for our teacher-preparation institutions. Thirty other states do.
12. Oregon does not offer an alternative-route program for teacher preparation. Forty-seven other states do.
13. Oregon does not provide incentives for teachers to earn national board certification. Thirty-eight other states do.
14. Oregon does not provide a mentoring program for new teachers. Twenty other states do.
15. Oregon does not provide a mentoring program for administrators. Fourteen other states do.
In short, Oregon is one of only five states in the nation to receive a D grade. What could possibly have gone wrong? Gutierrez?
"Everybody says there is this RACE problem. Everybody says this RACE problem will be solved when the third world pours into EVERY white country and ONLY into white countries."
"The Netherlands and Belgium are more crowded than Japan or Taiwan, but nobody says Japan or Taiwan will solve this RACE problem by bringing in millions of third worlders and quote assimilating unquote with them."
"Everybody says the final solution to this RACE problem is for EVERY white country and ONLY white countries to "assimilate," i.e., intermarry, with all those non-whites."
"What if I said there was this RACE problem and this RACE problem would be solved only if hundreds of millions of non-blacks were brought into EVERY black country and ONLY into black countries?"
"How long would it take anyone to realize I'm not talking about a RACE problem. I am talking about the final solution to the BLACK problem?"
"And how long would it take any sane black man to notice this and what kind of psycho black man wouldn't object to this?"
"But if I tell that obvious truth about the ongoing program of genocide against my race, the white race, Liberals and respectable conservatives agree that I am a naziwhowantstokillsixmillionjews."
"They say they are anti-racist. What they are is anti-white."
"Anti-racist is a code word for anti-white."
Guess the schools need to stop serving Fried Chicken, and Watermelon since that's a black thing, No more Pizza since that a Italian thing, No more tacos and burittos because that's Mexican.
This is just out of control, my vote is this principal gets kicked out of school and I would like to see her never get a job again….How can we pull together and get this world back on track and get these idiots out of any type of power position….Serious! these are the people that our kids are having to deal with on a daily basis? Serious, how is it that this principal is still allowed to be in her position? Ugh…it is stories like this that frustrate the hell out of me and make me wonder why Americans are looked down upon by those in other countries…PBJ is a staple for any American kid as long as I have known….red or yellow black or white! Get a life! educate the kids about the practice of treating each other the same, math, science, English, etc and let the life lessons remain with the parents of these kids…don't force your idiotic values on these young kids!
I don't know what America she lives in but I have never associated PB&J privilege. I've always known it to be associated with lower income and as I grew up low income in subsidized housing, my family ate lots of PB&J. I was educated in an ethnicly diverse public school, I didn't get a better education than the other kids in my school that weren't white. She is doing the children she is charged with teaching a great disservice by teaching them that they are victims of racism instead of instilling in them that they are capable of anything that they work hard for. Thank the lord in heaven I don't live in her school district!!!!
This is my wife posting this not me. Shes on my page.
Just because you're quite doesn't mean you come from privileged white people are also poor and they need help sometimes too
I don't know what America she lives in but I have never associated PB&J with privilege. For myself PB&J has always been associated with lower income. I grew up in a low income home living in subsidized housing, we ate a lot of PB&J. She is just stupid. My daughter hates pb&j, but brought injera (Ethiopian bread) to school this week. I wouldn't expect the school to do anything different for her nor should she think she needs to eat or not eat something based on race.
Ive been to almost every continent and have had some kind of local sandwich on all of them, sometimes even with peanut butter (havent eaten PB&J since i was 5)
HA HA HA HA HA! The title alone had me! "Maybe they eat tort. Or pita." Well maybe they eat socca, or injera, or volkornbrot, or whatever. Come on! When will it stop?
third grade, Grew up in the south, had black and white fountains, thought I'd die if I drank the wrong one,
now its PB&J, OMG, google texas lunch menus at any town 80% hispanic food AMERICANS WHERE DOES THIS STOP?
These people are infringing on our rights in our own country—trying hard to delete our laws, be accommodate, disrespect our traditions and customs, disrespect our flag, our ways of life. I have so had enough of the arrogance and superior attitudes. If you don't like America's customs our peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, get out of the country—go home or go somewhere else. I honestly do not know how much longer America is going to allow this kind of destruction before it stops completely. These people are the true racists and haters and intolerant beings. Please exit our country….
"Be ashamed you your skin is white be very ashamed." I hate people who say and think these things. Like every person with white fair skin is bad or their forefathers were bad. I have Irish, Scottish, and Cherokee Indian in my blood and I can tell you all three were mistreated in some form or way. I am proud of my heritage and it has nothing to do with my skin color. I am proud to be an American. For those of yall who don't like are ways here in America I will gladly pay your ticket from where ever the hell you came from. I will put together a fundraiser to get your sorry butt out of here. Sick of it.
THAT'S ONE RACIST PB&J! Stupid La Raza bitch should not be teaching American children…Peddle that shit in Mexico you lousy POS!

Sounds like the principle is racist.
That's dumb how the principle would find racism in Peanut Butter.
Are these people Fuc—- crazy? but then I guess most of the world is..
One more reason I homeschool my kids.
My son's teacher is awesome. I love that he goes to school in a small town, often with teachers who taught me too.
I went to college to be a teacher, and plan on returning to teaching once my own little children are of school age. I feel we are blessed to live in rural Northern California with small schools that we love.
PS- That princiipal is crazy. But I guess if you gathered statements from managers/CEOs/partners/etc of any set career/business what have you, you would find that there are crazy people everywhere…. Bet he gets a lot of heat from that! lol
Our schools here are full of these nuts and the schools in Redding were also.
We are rapidly becoming a nation of Dependency……If you are anything but white, you are automatically in the right and can obtain anything you want from the Govt., but if you are white, you are automatically a racist simply because you want what is right, and for everyone to work and pay taxes just like every other person who wants to make it on their own! If Obama is elected to another 4 yrs., he can do whatever he wants to this country and there ain't a DAMN thing we can do about it. Like John Hobgood said "God help us ALL"!
Apperently being american or white is now offensive. I feel so sorry for my kids. Its not going to get any better. Pretty soon wearing underware is going to be considered offensive. God help the next generation. Oops sorry if my reference to God offended any one. If it did… all i can say is fuck off and get a life.

I'm sorry but there should be NO class that exclude ANY student based on color of their skin…Whether it's only Hispanics, Blacks, Whites etc…that right their breeds more racism…Why can't everyone just see each other as HUMANS nothing more, nothing less…goodness!

Does this woman hear the voices coming out of the PB&J too? Because it sounds like she has some kind of mental illness. I'm not being sarcastic… I'm completely serious. I have a rental property in Oregon and contemplated some years ago moving up there because of the much lower cost of living than we have in California. This woman and her school district are like the poster children for the "Don't come to Oregon. Ever." campaign. I'd like to have children sometime soon and the thought of having them "educated" by these people is both frightening and ludicrous!
This is sooo outrageous! I am shocked that a principle would be allowed to integrate this into a school system. There are special programs for every race but "white" students-which is stated in this report. So the "white" student can't do anything in the school. Doing this crap is just promoting racism for child to learn. I'm disgusted.

Am I still racist if I have Peanut Butter and Nutella Sandwiches?
The late, great Redd Foxx summed it up best, when talking about how people made snide remarks about his Korean wife, saying he "married outside his race"… What the F*** did I marry, a duck? I married a WOMAN, from the HUMAN race.
