Scotland Yard has directed its staff to no longer use the words “blacklist” and “whitelist” over fears the words are racist. The British law enforcement agency told officers the words were no longer “appropriate.”

“I am sure we can appreciate the sensitivity around the use of such terminology today so please ensure it is no longer used,” Security Services Chief Brian Douglas wrote in an email obtained by The Sun.

In place of the two terms, Scotland Yard suggested using “greenlist” and “redlist.”

However, Scotland Yard said it does not reflect an official change in policy.

“It is a change in internal information communications technology terminology which reflects a more appropriate use of language,” the agency said in a statement to the newspaper.

  1. That's it, it's offical the UK has just passed the limit of no return, they are now the PC rulers of the world, and deserve to now and henceforth ignored by the remainder of the inhabitants of the world, with the exception of the French, let's face it they're just about as bats^&% crazy as the Brits. To my friends in the UK, please don't take this personally, it's the government that has crossed the line.

  2. "According to the Henry Holt Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins the word "blacklist" originated with a list England's King Charles II made of fifty-eight judges and court officers who sentenced his father, Charles I, to death in 1649. When Charles II was restored to the throne in 1660, thirteen of these regicides were executed and twenty-five sentenced to life imprisonment, while others escaped."

    • Seriously? Fuck that shit. I should be able to use whatever word I feel is appropriate for whatever situation I am in. Regardless of if people find it offensive because they MAKE it offensive.

    • Even farther back that this, the origins of whitelist, blackballed, etc etc comes from the original associations of white/light/good to black/darkness/evil. Nothing racial at all..

    • Precisely, but everyone has to make shit into a religion or racial war, regardless of the original intent. It's fucking appalling.

  3. So what? They have something against American Indians now?

All the morons in the world have finally taken over leadership roles.

  5. Where the UK goes America is sure to follow…if we allow it.

  6. Yes, we should make that word illegal. I'm sure there is some other word that describes all colors at once. Or is it lack of any color? I can never remember. How about the color "Lack"? Not politically incorrect and describes the lack of color….Hmm?

  7. PC color advice from the US liberals.

  8. Everyone is Full of the "American Spirit", After watching that 9/11 Attack Trial Saturday, That was full of Hatred, and Ignorance.

  9. Wouldn't "redlist" make you think of a list of Russin communists? Calling it a redlist and greenlist makes it sound like list of people who speed too much money, and those who make money. Some people are way to sensitive.

  10. It's all about…"The Importance Of It All".

  11. next the PGA tour will no longer call the tourney at Augusta national the masters in fear of making people think of slavery.

What is the "greenlist" (btw is that formerly the "whitelist") for? Good things/people or bad?

  14. Kelly Calder /

Oh for goodness sake- now that is ridiculous. For one – "white" or "black" are not "races." In fact there's really only one race – the human race but I digress.

The only people who might be "white" are possibly albinos. Otherwise what people call "white' they mean Caucasian. Do people realize that some Hispanics fall under "Caucasian" or who is all considered Caucasian?

    Ridiculous.

  15. Now I am offended because I am apparently on the "Unwanted" list and I feel belittled, perhaps I should sue for emotional distress!

  16. Patricia Rhudy Cook /

And don't even think about changing blackmail to whitefemail or I'll sue for pain and suffering and loss of consortium.

  17. Mustafa Ishmael Bilal /

Whites don't care because the color White is rarely associated with anything negative.

  18. Diversity and political correctness at all cost!

  19. But REDLIST will offend Indians! And GREENLIST will offend MARTIANS! O M G! PCness to the edge of STUPIDITY is ruining the entire planet!

  20. the Irish will object to green and native Americans will object to red…..good Lord…black and white have been used for ages…..stop being so pc….punks…..

  21. Also ban any word that SOUNDS like a word that might offend.

    • Matt Baker /

I remember when i worked retail years ago, we were not suppose to refer to the day after thanksgiving as "black friday"….just stupid

    • Really pickle sounds like cripple to me we should ban that as well

  22. Gay Rifen Crawford /

Technically, "black" people aren't really black – their skin is different shades of brown, just as Caucasians aren't white, but varying shades of tan :P

  23. Are we going to get rid of the terms whitewash and brown-nose as well? Or do we only care about what the offends black people?

  24. What about throwing in the white towel?

    • Vicki Tickel Vance /

Where are you going to throw it? Into a black hole? :0)
