Parents in a small Washington State community are infuriated after their 11-year-old children were given graphic descriptions of oral and anal sex during a sex education class led by an elementary school principal.

Fifth-graders at Onalaska Elementary School were supposed to get a lesson about HIV-AIDS, but the class discussion turned graphic when a child asked about other forms of sexual activity. The principal, who happened to be teaching the class, then told the children about oral and anal sex.
“I’m one pissed off cowboy,” parent James Gilliand told Fox News Radio. “I didn’t appreciate them teaching my daughter – who is innocent of that – at all.”
Gilliland and his wife, Kadra, were among the moms and dads in Onalaska, about 73 miles south of Tacoma, demanding answers from their local school system – and so far – they are still waiting.
“I was just shocked because I trusted my little country school,” Kadra Gilliland told Fox News Radio. “I didn’t think they were going to talk about such things. I trusted by school – that’s the bottom line and they crossed the line.”
School officials did not return calls seeking comment.
However, Superintendent Scott Fenter defended the principal’s action to local media and said that the lesson did not go too far.
“I think the principal handled it appropriately at the time; she only gave factual information, no demonstrations,” Fenter told NWCN.com. “Because in sixth grade they start becoming sexually aware and you’ve got to teach them ahead of time.”
In an interview with Seattle’s Q-13 Fox News, Fenter said the lessons came from “state-adopted curriculum.”
“In reality, she stuck to the curriculum,” he told Seattle’s Q-13 Fox News. “It’s pretty difficult to talk about STDs or sexually transmitted diseases without explaining what that is, or how it’s transmitted.”
Since 1988 Washington State has required some sort of sex education starting in the fifth grade.
“Kids leaving 5th grade and moving into middle school start getting exposed to a lot more information, and we know that`s the age where many children start to become sexually active, unfortunately,” Fenter told the Fox affiliate. “And that`s a scary thought, (but) that`s the truth.”
Parent Curtis Pannkuk said if that’s the case – the curriculum needs to be changed.
“One of the other parents said it well – they raped the minds of the ten year old, eleven year old kids,” he told Fox News Radio. “Children were traumatized.”
The Pannkuk and Gilliland families said they knew something was wrong when the daughters came home from school. They were quiet and withdrawn.
“You could tell she was embarrassed,” Jean Pannkuk told Fox News Radio. “She didn’t want to have to repeat what had been said. It was really sad to see her struggle with feeling like she was responsible.”
Pannkuk and her husband sat their daughter down and asked her explain what she was taught in the class.
“You take a man’s penis and you put it in your mouth – that’s what the girls do to the boys,” their daughter told the couple. “The boys spread the girls legs apart and put their mouths down on the vaginas.”
Pannkuk said he became enraged as his 11-year-old daughter recounted what the principal had told the classroom.
“Steam was coming out my ears,” he said. “I was very, very upset. I understand that they need to teach these kids sex education – but 11-year-olds? I have a problem with that. The wife and I were very – very upset.”
Gilliland said another child explained to their parents that it “was basically like a lollipop.”
“There are a lot of pissed off parents besides this pissed-off cowboy,” he said. “I’ve been told they’re getting sexually active, younger and younger – maybe in the city – but not here in the country.”
But Supt. Fenter told Seattle’s Fox affiliate that parents were sent a notice informing them about the program – and that they had a right to review the curriculum. But he said, only three parents showed up.
Mrs. Pannkuk said she was aware of the class “but I didn’t know it was going to be that explicit.”
Gilliland said he has no problem teaching sex education – but this particular class went too far.
“It’s one thing to teach about reproduction,” he said. ‘She knows about breeding her guinea pigs, horses, dogs and so on. She knows how babies are born and how they are created, but when they go teaching them these extra acts – it’s appalling.”
Mrs. Gilliland said it’s important for parents across the nation to get involved and to pay attention.
“Be more involved in your school,” she said. “See what your kids are learning. Pay attention. Talk to your kids.”
She said many of the families are now dealing with the aftermath of the class.
“She should be bouncing on the trampoline, riding horses – doing normal kid stuff,” she said of her daughter. “We don’t need to talk about that stuff at that age.
But now they do.
“The damage is done,” Pannkuk said.

Liberal darling, Joy Behar, never apologizes for anything, least of all when she engages in one of her snarky attacks on conservatives. However, she out-Behared herself Tuesday when she erupted with a show of uncivilized contempt for Mitt Romney and his religion.
Newly chosen as a commentator on Al Gore’s un-watched Current TV, Behar sputtered in a Mediaite interview, ”I’d like to see his [Romney's] house burn, one of his millions of houses burning down,” adding, “Who’s he going to call, the Mormon fire patrol?”.
Then, as if that remark didn’t adequately prove she weren’t a nasty bitch, in her usual classy fashion and in a desperate quest for an audience, Behar hurled a challenge to conservatives to come on her show, “If they have the balls.”.
Aside from the fact her gracious invite would exclude dozens of beautiful, conservative women like Sarah Palin, S.E. Culp, Michelle Malkin, et al., her remarks were just a tad extreme even for Joyless Bahar.
HOMOSEXUALITY. Gay people generally seem like joyless people, stuck as they are between normality and abnormality and unable to establish a viable connection with the former.
James Clementi, the gay brother of gay teen Tyler Clementi who leaped off the George Washington Bridge after he was videotaped at Rutgers University engaging in flagrante delicto activities with a homosexual paramour, thinks society failed Tyler.
In a whining critique of bullies and bullying on HuffingtonPost.com, Clementi conceded he himself went along with bullying in order to get along but nevertheless concluded, “The responsibility is on each of us to make it clear that bullying is not acceptable in our schools, our workplaces, our homes, or anywhere else that human beings might find themselves.”.
Nice lecture but had James Clementi practiced what he now preaches, Tyler might still be alive.
Over a decade ago, the Supreme Court decided the Boy Scouts of America acted within their First Amendment constitutional right when they restricted membership as scouts or scout leaders to people who abided by the BSA moral code. It is not because children are stupid; it is because children are smart and need to know how to manage what they take in from society. You've seen television; it is full of things that children had never even been exposed to back in your day. In this age of information children are saturated with stuff and they need to know definitive truths that parents shouldn't be afraid to talk to them about, like what constitutes sex and what happens when they don't do it safely. But if parents are going to pretend that their child doesn't know about anything sexual it is denying their child to do things safely if they DO choose to have sex behind their parents backs. Believe me, this happens and it hurts to say that this is true but because of the things that go on today, mostly the media has caused us to prepare our children for the possibility of sex and everything that comes with it.

"It's basically like a lollipop" said the CHILD. Nothing wrong with a lollipop is there? What reason is there to turn down a lollipop when one is offered to her by a friend? If they are too young to make intelligent decisions regarding sex acts then they are too young to be teaching about them especially if sanitized to the point they are being told a penis is like a lollipop.

Talk to your kids and make sure they know hey can talk to you before they hear this from peole who don't have their interest in mind.

If a man or woman next door told your child that and dared to show them pictures, you would have the right to prosecute them for sexual abuse and sue for emotional damages. Every parent outraged needs to do such thing, take it all the way. Leave our children alone.

I'm a high school teacher and would not tell my kids of things of this nature, the left is going to far again….

That makes me both mad and sad….. Kids in the 5th grade should not be taught about sex (other than learning about the transition their own bodies will be/are going through) – it saddens me that children are exposed to sexuality at the age of their innocence. Call me naive but I wholeheartedly feel that we need to keep our children's innocence in tact as long as possible- I hate the fact that sex education is taught in schools (and a requirement) I hope and pray that when the time comes my son is comfortable enough to ask me or his father any questions he has about sex.

I think the MAIN issue here is not that the public school was teaching children all of these things, but primarily that the education is taking much more responsibility that a parent should have.
Perhaps the school administration can pitch the class to an adult (parents) audience so that the parents can make an informed decision on whether or not they want their kids to be "subjected" to that type of class. If anything, the school can provide materials that they will use to the parents so if the parents want to teach their children what STDs are and whatever else, they can teach it nearly parallel to that of the education system.
I know when I was in High School (9th) and I took health, my parents had to sign a permission slip to allow me to watch the videos presented in the class. The kids took it as a joke, but now that I look back, I respect the school for doing that because sometimes parents want what they think is best for their kids and the parents may not have full faith in the school's ability to properly teach about sex and what not.
The fact is, if I were a parent and the government and school system told me that my kids HAVE to learn that type of material, then I wouldn't really appreciate that. That's one of those things parents should teach, in my opinion (unless the parent doesn't mind that the school does it).
If children are becoming Sexually active, in their own little cheesy boyfriend/girlfriend ways, by middle school – then, are school-systems wrong for opening Pandora's Box in an attempt to educate savvy young boys & girls on their possibilities to overt contracting an STD, or turning up pregnant?
One solution to this would be to let the parents know the date on the calendar when this school education-session would be taking place, so that parents can prepare their children's virgin ears for what might be discussed, in order to minimize the shock-value of hearing about penetration, and other graphic details for the first times in their lives, right after coming back from a school trip to Sesame Place.

I don't think it's wrong for schools to teach sex Ed, but it is the generic, here are the parts and what happens when they get together. And FYI, middle school parents can opt their kids out of the class or those lessons.
You're right – if they make it mandatory for schools to offer the education of sex to these children, there definitely should be a 'standard approach' to working the conversion gradually toward more detailed information. There are math standards – so why not sex-ed standards.
