Obama Leaves God Out of Thanksgiving Address

Print This Post Print This Post

By Todd Starnes

President Obama did not include any reference to God during his weekly address titled, “On Thanksgiving, Grateful for the Men and Women Who Defend Our Country.”

His remarks were void of any religious references although Thanksgiving is a holiday traditionally steeped in giving thanks and praise to God.

The president said his family was “reflecting on how truly lucky we truly are.”

For many Americans, though, Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on how blessed and thankful they are.

The president said the “most American of blessings” is the “chance to determine our own destiny.”

He called the very first Thanksgiving a “celebration of community”

“We’re also grateful for the Americans who are taking time out of their holiday to serve in soup kitchens and shelters, making sure their neighbors have a hot meal and a place to stay,” he said. “This sense of mutual responsibility – the idea that I am my brother’s keeper; that I am my sister’s keeper – has always been a part of what makes our country special.”

The president said that belief is “one of the reasons the Thanksgiving tradition has endured.”

But nowhere in the 11-paragraph address does he mention the Almighty.

Instead, he references the Civil War, two World Wars, and the Great Depression – noting that “Americans drew strength from each other.”

However, President Abraham Lincoln said the nation drew its strength from God. He declared as much in his 1863 Thanksgiving Day proclamation:

“I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.   And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union.”

President Obama told the nation in his address that if they support each other and look out for each other, “and remember that we’re all in this together, then I know that we too will overcome the challenges of our time.”

Remarks of President Barack Obama

Weekly Address

Thursday, November 24, 2011

The White House

From my family to yours, I’d like to wish you a happy Thanksgiving. Like millions of Americans, Michelle, Malia, Sasha and I will spend the day eating great food, watching a little football, and reflecting on how truly lucky we truly are.

As Americans, each of us has our own list of things and people to be thankful for.  But there are some blessings we all share.

We’re especially grateful for the men and women who defend our country overseas. To all the service members eating Thanksgiving dinner far from your families: the American people are thinking of you today.  And when you come home, we intend to make sure that we serve you as well as you’re serving America.

We’re also grateful for the Americans who are taking time out of their holiday to serve in soup kitchens and shelters, making sure their neighbors have a hot meal and a place to stay. This sense of mutual responsibility – the idea that I am my brother’s keeper; that I am my sister’s keeper – has always been a part of what makes our country special. And it’s one of the reasons the Thanksgiving tradition has endured.

The very first Thanksgiving was a celebration of community during a time of great hardship, and we have followed that example ever since. Even when the fate of our union was far from certain – during a Civil War, two World Wars, a Great Depression – Americans drew strength from each other. They had faith that tomorrow would be better than today.

We’re grateful that they did. As we gather around the table, we pause to remember the pilgrims, pioneers, and patriots who helped make this country what it is. They faced impossible odds, and yet somehow, they persevered. Today, it’s our turn.

I know that for many of you, this Thanksgiving is more difficult than most. But no matter how tough things are right now, we still give thanks for that most American of blessings, the chance to determine our own destiny. The problems we face didn’t develop overnight, and we won’t solve them overnight. But we will solve them. All it takes is for each of us to do our part.

With all the partisanship and gridlock here in Washington, it’s easy to wonder if such unity is really possible. But think about what’s happening at this very moment: Americans from all walks of life are coming together as one people, grateful for the blessings of family, community, and country.

If we keep that spirit alive, if we support each other, and look out for each other, and remember that we’re all in this together, then I know that we too will overcome the challenges of our time.

So today, I’m thankful to serve as your President and Commander-and-Chief. I’m thankful that my daughters get to grow up in this great country of ours. And I’m thankful for the chance to do my part, as together, we make tomorrow better than today.

Thanks, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

  1. Wow, you provided a 150 year old speech mentioning God as something Obama should have done? Obama's speech was Christian or Muslim or Jewish or Buddhist. It was a "Godly" speech. It spoke of caring about your fellow humans, family, compassion, love, decency. It was truly an all inclusive speech and I think that's a beautiful "Godly", thing.

  2. The only way you could expect this heathen to mention GOD would be in a demeaning way. What destroys me is the fact that American people put this anti-God into the presidentcy, that we were so ignorant that we could not read the anti-GOD signs which were prevalent. WE DID IT OURSELVES. You may answer,"I didn't" well I didn't either but he is there, with all the power that these foolish votes give him.

Romney, Santorum and Gingrich forget god and not a word. Next thing you know conservatives will hang the founding fathers for not putting god in the constitution. Guess they will have to read the constitution first.

The only way to see the truth is through Jesus Christ.

  4. Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits and humbly to implore His protection and favor therefore, I do recommend that the people of these United States may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country (George Washington).

  5. Ben Franklin states, "In the beginning of the contest with Great Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayer in this room for the Divine protection. Our prayers, sir, were heard and they were graciously answered….I therefore beg leave to move that hence forth prayers imploring the assitance of Heaven, and its blessings on our deliberations, be held in this Assembly every morning before we proceed to business."

  6. Is your faith really so weak that you need everything you hear to be about God? Personally, my beliefs are strong enough that I can hear other points of view without freaking the f**k out.

You're all a bunch of idiots grow up, you need the President to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving with god? You people are a joke.

Read the "TREATY OF TRIPOLI" people! I'm proud of "President Obama" and I know he's going to get his 2nd term, Because the Candidates you've got running are a bunch of losers. come on Conservatives couldn't you have picked someone better?

  9. This is not surprising. Obama omitted “Creator” from the Declaration of Independence. This is just more par for the course, his ideology being brought forward.

    • He tried to secularize his speech as much a possible but still appease Christians and Jews. Did anyone catch his reference of Genesis 4:9, "I am my brothers keeper, I am my sisters keeper."

  10. dear everyone! It's a freakin holiday. Be "Thankful". That's what the holiday is for. This article is just nitpicking on every word the president says. I don't like our president. But seriously, Grow up and get over it. Just because he leaves something out doesn't mean he's a horrible man.

  11. You people are fucking insane.

Fox news should learn to speak for them selves and not the right wing, you are loosing viewers, or I should say me. Thank you President Obama for a wonderful speech, another first for you…Open your closed minds people we are all different and live in this country so we all have a choice. It is called freedom……..Shame on those right wingers for trying to take our FREEDOM away.

  13. The catholic priest is on TV fox news saying how the Obama THANGIVING address should have been more like George Washington or Abraham lincoln ha ha ha those were former slave owners oh men. Fox tell the priest that he needs to talk to penn state or syracuse university and then go back to the catholic church a make sure kids stop getting abused. Its out of control. And Obama great speech.

    Since I can't comment on that thread…

Bruce Rowley So, you know ALL the Atheists in the US to make that assumption? WOW! You know a lot of people.

I didn't just "[run] off to anther country"; I was given an opportunity and took it. Thank you for the prejudgment though. You make me feel all warm and fuzzy with love.

I know there are other news sources out there, that is why I said "something OTHER THAN…" Yeah, you might want to learn to understand what you read.

Somewhere in a response you said you only knew of 2 Swedish exports (that is what it says in my notifications, but I can't find the thread), Volvo and Sonja Henie. Well, Sonja is Norwegian so hmm…yeah. For an investigator you sure don't know how to look things up. Let's see, IKEA—heard of that? SAAB? SAS? Greta Garbo? Yngwie Malmssteen, ABBA, The Separator and the Milking Machine, Alfred Nobel(really haven't heard of him?), Tetra Pak, Peter Stormare, Alexander Skarsgård, Ever eaten from a Smorgasboard (Smörgåsbord)? Ann-Margret (yep, she is Swedish). H&M (Hennes & Mauritz), The Pacemaker, dynamite, Dolph Lundgren, The Turbo Engine for Cars, The Propeller, Anders Celsius, ooh I could go on.

"… you will NOT be missed". WOW! So, I guess I should call my parents and my friends and tell them that you say that they don't miss me? I should tell all my expat friends this too? Or does this only pertain to American expats?

Well, on that note, I will take my leave. Have a great day.

    Blessed Be.

  16. Yea, I mean can you believe the nerve of a President who represents ALL Americans and has a religiously neutral Thanksgiving speech? Not every one is a christian in this country and I for one am glad to have a President who doesn't treat those of us who aren't as second-rate citizens. Todd you sound like a bitter sad man.

  17. Alyssa Freeman /

I have just learned, today, that what Fox is comlpaining about is the President's Thanksgiving television address, not his Thanksgiving PROCLAMATION. In the President's offical Thanksgiving Proclamation, given every year, the President DOES thank God. Here is the sentence, followed by a link: "As we gather in our communities and in our homes, around the table or near the hearth, we give thanks to each other and to God for the many kindnesses and comforts that grace our lives." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/23/obama-thanksgiving-proclamation-2011-released_n_1110916.html. If you prefer a Christian source: http://www.examiner.com/christianity-in-bangor/obama-s-thanksgiving-proclamation-20111. I also saw this in the Richmond Free Press (it was emailed to them and, I'm sure, to other newspapers, as well. This is the official, FORMAL proclamation. Obama mentioned God in his previous addresses, so what's the big deal about not addressing God in this one? He also mentions thanking God in his 2011 National Day of Prayer Proclamation. I'm sure this won't make any difference to all teh zealots out there, but I thought it should be posted.

  18. This is a false controversy. He talked about family and being grateful. Also, God was mentioned in his written version – just not the You Tube version. Ridiculous stories like this diverts us from working together in these difficult times. And whether you agree with him or not, Barack Obama is YOUR President. Treat him with some respect please. And please respect everyone's right to celebrate holidays in their own way. It's called being free.

  19. It's amazing the lengths this organization (Fox News) will go to try and vilify the President. Thanksgiving is an American holiday not a Christian holiday! Lest we forget the first Thanksgiving was the coming together of Christians and Non-Christians( don't forget the Indians). Plus how could any real Christian condemn a speech that champions community service those who help their neighbor! Aren't these the same values Jesus taught? Why are they any less important when not said under the specter of religion?

  20. I don't keep up with politics very much, but it is my understanding that Obama is a self-professed and acting Christian. Therefore, his speech should not be picked apart by athiests because they don't believe in God or by Christians because they do believe in God. The issue is that Obama says he does believe in God. Based on this statement and in an effort to remain true to his own beliefs and not influenced by anyone else, he should have at least mentioned God's name in giving thanks at least one time. By not doing so he is leaving the public to speculate on whether he is really a Christian (whether he is or not is his own business) or if he has allowed the public to influence his speeches to such a degree that he leaves out entirely the one he should be most thankful to; which if that is the case, seems like a poor leader. Obama's beliefs has nothing to do with how you or I believe at all. In reading Lincoln's speech, you know he was a Christian. In reading Obama's speech, he sounds like an athiest (which is fine if he is) but professes to be a Christian. Why would he profess to be a Christian if he's not, and why not speak like one if he is?

    • Laura Steel /

Because he's respecting those that are not Christian. Thanksgiving is not a religious holiday, so why mention Christian beliefs to a secular nation? It's an acknowledgment of the fact that not everyone in America will be thanking God today, and I see it as a great example of his awareness that just because he is Christian, it does not mean all Americans are.

    • Laura Steel -Again, this is not a matter of whether or not Thanksgiving is a relgious holiday. It has absolutely nothing to do with this issue. Obama thanked people who died a long time ago who will never know they were thanked, but he didn't thank the one who he believes is still alive by his own profession. Based on the Christian belief, Jesus tells his followers to not be ashamed of him or he will be ashamed of them on the day of judgement. And also based on the Christian belief, a Christain has no choice but to publicly acknowledge God–it was Jesus' instructions to go and spread the gospel. No where did he tell people to go and respect other people's beliefs. Again, this all points back to Obama professing to be a Christian and if he will respect God by publicly thanking him–not whether you or I are a Christian or not.

    • Laura is right. He's trying not to be divisive. But he's in a bad situation. Don't mention God in your Thanksgiving remarks and people run around in circles screaming and shouting that you must hate God and America. Mention Him too much and those same people would say you're using God for religous purposes. The Right hates Obama and anything he does will make them mad. You're falling right into their hands because you don't follow politics, but they have you riled up about something that isn't really important in the first place.

    • That above link is from last year when he said among other things, "As we stand at the close of one year and look to the promise of the next, we lift up our hearts in gratitude to God for our many blessings, for one another, and for our Nation." So since he mentioned God last year, I'm sure the same people who are damning him this year praised him last year. Right? Right?

    • Joe Hinson -That's right, you're right, no one needs to be thanked for the things they do for people EVERY year. Maybe once evey two, three, or four years. Oh, wait a minute, you said it's not important anyway. It wasn't important to thank the pilgrims. No one would have gotten upset if he didn't mention them–but he made sure to bring them up, but didn't thank God whom he believes hears and sees everything he says and does.

When Obama declared on TV that he is a Christian and that he has faith in Jesus I took him at his word and I thought he was a Christian. But did you know that a Muslim has faith in Jesus also. But what they believe about Jesus is different than what us Christians believe. I have heard Obama say things that a Christian would never say, so I no longer believe Obama is a true Christian. We have to also be on guard against a new religion that is coming up. They are combining Christianity and Islam into a single religion and they call this Chris-lam. My opinion this is where Obama stands.

  21. Laura Steel /

NEWS FLASH, FOX (even though you may not be able to recall what real news looks like anymore): Not all Americans believe in God. In fact, the US is meant to SEPARATE church and state, which have NOTHING to do with one another. This is such an antiquated, offensive argument, it's disheartening. I have family and friends of all different religions, and never do we insult or judge one another for believing in or not believing in God. I guess I didn't realize that we were going to approach Thanksgiving with the same Puritanical mentality of those who started the tradition. Seriously America, get a clue, it's time to progress.

    • Laura Steel /

Just out of curiosity, why do theists feel so personally threatened by Obama's exclusions of God from his speech? I do not feel threatened or indoctrinated when he closes speeches with "God Bless, America," so why should theists feel that their religion is threatened by him not mentioning God? Furthermore, Obama failing to mention God in one speech does not make him an atheist (oh, the horror!!) it makes him respectful of his fellow Americans that do not hold the same beliefs as him (I know, a theist respectful of non-believers is pretty hard to fathom, especially based on this message board). In return, I respect Obama for keeping his Thanksgiving speech about family and important values, rather than turning it into a holiday about religion. He's the president, not your personal priest. America is a diverse melting pot, and refusing to recognize that is plain ignorance.

    • Laura Steel /

Final point here, why are we comparing the President's speech to Lincoln's? Yes, yes I realize they're both presidents, but one is our modern day president, and the other held beliefs from the 17TH CENTURY!! Our country has vastly changed since the 1600s (thankfully), so I think it really needs to be pointed out that what was appropriate in 1863, is not appropriate for 2011. By that logic the president should not have mentioned watching football, because Lincoln didn't mention football!!! Fox's argument is so flimsy and sad, and I need to get off the message board before I just give up on America as a whole…

  22. That's despicable how could he not mention God directly? (just like the Lincoln speech quoted in this article). That's why I have no respect for the Founding Father either. They omitted God from every one of the Founding Documents. (save the first sentence in DoI, about "Nature's God."Whatever that is. sounds Druidic to me.) And not one reference to the baby Jesus. Little 8 lbs, 6 ounce, baby Jesus.

  23. No point getting angry with a Godless president, just the next GE…then he knows his fate..

  24. John Wayne McClung /

I don't really understand what anybody's complaining about. Obama said "blessings" in his talk four times. It doesn't get much more religious than that in such a short speech.

    • Ty Thompson /

Actually if you look into it each our last four Presidents left God out as well, but unfortunately most people live on sound bites

  25. Gee Todd, why don't you mention that Bush II left your god out of a Thanksgiving address? Why don't you bring up that Obama in past Thanksgiving has mentioned your deity? Why don't' you bring up that Obama did mention this god in his written address? For a journalist, you are awfully lazy. Slow news day?

Why do you need the government anyway to affirm your personal religious beliefs? I don't need the government to affirm my humanistic beliefs.

  26. Can't leave out what you never had.

  27. Can't leave out what you never had.

The First National Proclamation of Thanksgiving was given by the Continental Congress in 1777:

FOR AS MUCH as it is the indispensable Duty of all Men to adore the superintending Providence of Almighty God; to acknowledge with Gratitude their Obligation to him for Benefits received, and to implore such farther Blessings as they stand in Need of: And it having pleased him in his abundant Mercy, not only to continue to us the innumerable Bounties of his common Providence; but also to smile upon us in the Prosecution of a just and necessary War, for the Defense and Establishment of our unalienable Rights and Liberties; particularly in that he hath been pleased, in so great a Measure, to prosper the Means used for the Support of our Troops, and to crown our Arms with most signal success:

It is therefore recommended to the legislative or executive Powers of these UNITED STATES to set apart THURSDAY, the eighteenth Day of December next, for SOLEMN THANKSGIVING and PRAISE: That at one Time and with one Voice, the good People may express the grateful Feelings of their Hearts, and consecrate themselves to the Service of their Divine Benefactor; and that, together with their sincere Acknowledgments and Offerings, they may join the penitent Confession of their manifold Sins, whereby they had forfeited every Favor; and their humble and earnest Supplication that it may please GOD through the Merits of JESUS CHRIST, mercifully to forgive and blot them out of Remembrance; That it may please him graciously to afford his Blessing on the Governments of these States respectively, and prosper the public Council of the whole: To inspire our Commanders, both by Land and Sea, and all under them, with that Wisdom and Fortitude which may render them fit Instruments, under the Providence of Almighty GOD, to secure for these United States, the greatest of all human Blessings, INDEPENDENCE and PEACE: That it may please him, to prosper the Trade and Manufactures of the People, and the Labor of the Husbandman, that our Land may yield its Increase: To take Schools and Seminaries of Education, so necessary for cultivating the Principles of true Liberty, Virtue and Piety, under his nurturing Hand; and to prosper the Means of Religion, for the promotion and enlargement of that Kingdom, which consisteth "in Righteousness, Peace and Joy in the Holy Ghost.

And it is further recommended, That servile Labor, and such Recreation, as, though at other Times innocent, may be unbecoming the Purpose of this Appointment, be omitted on so solemn an Occasion.

George Washington, leader of the revolutionary forces in the American Revolutionary War, proclaimed a Thanksgiving in December 1777 as a victory celebration honoring the defeat of the British at Saratoga.

  30. Matt Johnson /

Thanksgiving is not a religious holiday. It is a harvest holiday that is celebrated by people of many different faiths and cultures, including Native Americans. It is not an exclusive Christian holiday.

  31. Thanksgiving is for being thankful for what we have, be it material, health, safety or whatever. Just whom was President thanking? As for me, I was thanking the Almighty GOD from whom all things come.

  32. humanity has created thousands of gods… so which ONE did he not acknowledge?

    YOURS?

  33. Obama won't announce this publicly, but he isn't a Christian. It wouldn't bother me except for the fact that he's not an atheist either. He has a religion, and he's let the evidence slip out a few times already by accident. Watching the press try to sweep his little gaffes under the rug would be pretty funny, if only he wasn't the commander in chief of the armed forces of the United States of America.

People of America, you've handed your baton off to a member of the opposing team who wore the uniform of the USA, and pretended to be a fellow teammate. Now that he's come to a stop in the middle of the track and is saying he has a cramp in his leg, why do you still believe him? Are you better off today than you were when he took office or does it seem things in America continue to get worse for the people? He can only blame his predecessor for so long before that becomes stale. True enough Nancy Pelosi and her fellow democrats took charge of the house of representatives in 2007, and she deliberately tripped George Bush, but he still managed to get to his feet and limp the baton over to Obama while still in first place. Obama showed no signs of a leg cramp until the moment after he had the baton in his hand.

Yes George Bush tripped, but Nancy Pelosi tripped him in 2007, and people even witnessed it. At least Bush had the courage and strength to get back to his feet and hand the baton off to Obama in January 2009. Nothing has gone right for the country since that time, and Obama still has the balls to blame George Bush for his own failure. I find that incredible and nausiating!

  34. Every citizen in the WORLD should watch this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mm1KOBMg1Y8

We have ONLY 1 more chance to save America and that chance is on Tuesday Novermber 6 2012. Take the day off from work if necessary. It's THAT important.

  35. He is just being "politically correct". I am a Christian and not a fan of Obama's although I respect him and support him as our leader and will do so until he is out of office. We are to respect our leaders and to support them unless they are doing something to harm us or others. I do not find this speech offensive as a Christian. He does make biblical references such as "our brother's keepers" and other remarks throughout his speech if you listen to what he is saying…he just does not say "God". He is trying to embrace all beliefs in America without showing favoritism to one particular belief. I think that the media and others try to focus too much on this and should start looking to other aspects of Obama instead of being concerned so much on how he is omitting God from these speeches. I am not offended as a Christian as he did not deny the existence of God…he was just trying to include all Americans in this speech. Do I believe in God? Yes! Do I call myself a Christian? Yes! Do I need to hear a president reference God in every speech? No. I applaud him for trying to include ALL people in his thanksgiving wishes. We should be respectful to one another and I don't think that forcing religion or beliefs on America will make anyone who isn't already a Christian (or whatever religion you are trying to force) very happy. We should let others know we are Christians by our love and respect for one another. Actions speak louder than words and we (Christians) are to walk in this world showing Christ through us and how we speak, act, and react. God is the judge…not us.

  36. Several rational issues here from all of you extremists. Let's take the poster, Justin Quest, for instance. He apparently thinks he's capable of judging the level of a people groups "happiness". That's incredible, because not only is "happiness" created by the mind, but it's intangible, how exactly did you measure that? A pathetic attempt to provide apologetics for your weak position.

Bill Roby – name calling x2, no substance to your argument and honestly, a weak point not supported by any evidence.

Diane Taylor – Fundamentalist comments like that are almost worthless, except that they build further resentment among non-believers (assuming your goal is to help them).

Chris Garrard – You are proposing a philosophy that forces people to accept things. Is that not in itself forcing a belief upon someone? What happened to people having freedom of religion? Use some logic man, seriously.

My point is – if you're going to make arguments here in public – you are simply creating resentments between opposing view points. My guess (call me crazy) is that you all enjoy drama and the argument. I got it. However, if this is not your goal why not start off by following a few of the following simple pieces of advice;.

    1) Be humble.
    2) Cite your sources.
    3) Be willing to listen.
    4) Name calling builds resentment and destroys dialogue, refrain.

    I love you all. =)

  37. Not sure god missed him much anyway.

  38. He did not give thanks to any Super-Hero's, oh yea, they don't exist but in the mind. Just like god.

  39. Reading these remarks is scary. When will the Lord say, that's enough and call all Christians to heaven and the rest will go to the Devil? "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord".

  40. Wil Bagley /

    Big surprise there.

  41. "The president said his family was “reflecting on how truly lucky we truly are.”".
A truer statement has never been made.

  42. To The President: Sir, maybe you are unwilling to address where these Blessings come from, but I am not. If there was not an Almighty looking out for us, then these words you so glibly say would not exist to begin with. Look at it for what it is…just exactly where do you think the Blessings COME from? You?
    I think not.

And on that day there will be a rather long BARBEQUE.
I myself might have a few atheist burgers, assuming of course all of the sin had been cooked from their bones.

  45. Marie Perkins Moore /

well, I'm glad that each one here gives thanks to themselves but it is to God almighty we shall all give account of our Lives because we did not create ourselves and it is not 'we' ourselves who will judge us and the lives we have lead.If all this was of Life was to love our families and death ended all that Love, what then? Love would end at the grave, never to amount to anything after that.I want Life, eternal life, with my family not a non-existence.I want heaven, not hell because I refuse to accept that Life God offers me through Jesus…that is Love.

  46. It is good that he left out God. For him to have done otherwise would have been extreme hypocrisy.
